Tips to buy a well-fitted button-down
1. Choose quality over quantity: Button-downs are a great staple to add to your closet, so investing in high-quality options is recommended. When garments are on the lower end, it often means that production costs have been reduced. This includes the pattern of the garment. When factories create a garment size, they typically use generic patterns. The cheaper the production, the fewer pattern options and sizes available. That's why cheaper brands will often have "oversized" options, as they require fewer details (cuts and seams). Investing in a high-quality piece ensures better materials and garment construction. You don't need a large collection of button-downs; I would recommend having both lighter and darker colors. If you enjoy wearing linens or cotton during the summer, you can opt for a white or ivory button-down for daytime and a more silky, darker option such as navy, black, or forest green for evening events.
2. Invest in custom made clothing: Wardrobe staples like blazers, trousers, and button-downs are pieces you can wear year-round. Made-to-measure will ensure they fit well and are crafted with quality materials. If you've been struggling with getting the fit right and have purchased several ill-fitting pieces, you'll ultimately save money in the long run by purchasing custom-made clothing.
3. Know Your Measurements: Take accurate measurements of your bust, waist, and hip circumference, as well as your arm length. This will help you select the right size and fit. Read Size Charts: Pay close attention to size charts provided by the online retailer. Compare your measurements to the size chart to ensure a good fit.
4. Consider Stretch Fabric: Button-downs with a bit of stretch can provide a more forgiving fit, especially if you're in between sizes or have varying body proportions.
5. Check Return Policy: Ensure the online store has a flexible return policy in case the shirt doesn't fit as expected. When trying a new brand, it's normal to go through a fitting phase. I recommend reading reviews about fit.
