New single MY PEACE out today 🌹

Last year when I was visiting Los Angeles, I had dinner with — Rostam and I have written together on several songs and been friends since the early days of Voxtrot and Vampire Weekend. After dinner he offered to give me a ride back to where I was staying, on the condition that I play him the new Voxtrot demos en route. 

He had largely positive feedback but gave one criticism: as I understood it, he wished he could get a firmer sense of the “Ramesh behind the songs”... a place name, a timestamp … anything to indicate that it was me singing about my life.

I thought about this when writing MY PEACE and decided to be very direct about my early experiences as a young hyped musician, the heartbreak of losing that hype, and the subsequent years of hard work and ego battling that have brought me home to a place of truly loving music.

In terms of the full-band arrangement, I love how Jared took my simple chord progression and transformed it into the melancholy folk riff in the breakdown. The syncopated groove of the rhythm section and auxiliary percussion, combined with ’s horns, bring such a palpable joy.

We had a blast making MY PEACE and we hope you enjoy it!

Sonically, it straddles the line of early twee Voxtrot and the more syncopated, driving sound that was to take over, starting with Raised By Wolves.

Hearing it now reminds me of carefree, truly indie days, when a career was a distant concept and a seven-minute song seemed perfectly logical ;)

Great to finally get some new music out there after a long hibernation 🧸 Can’t tell you how much it means to us to [once again] be able to do what we do.

We’ve been blown away by the response to NEW WORLD ROMANCE and ANOTHER FIRE, and have just finished mixing new song number 3, so hopefully we’ll have news about that at the beginning of next year.

So grateful to longtime listeners for sticking with us and to new folks for coming on board. Can’t wait to see you all in 2024.

Very excited to announce that Voxtrot will play the 2024 festival in Barcelona!

I first went to Primavera when I was 19 and a first year student at the University of Glasgow. Belle & Sebastian were the headliners and I was thrilled that the lineup seemed to include every indie band I loved plus all of the electronic music I’d discovered since moving to Europe (Peaches, 2 Many DJs, etc).

Barcelona held great allure for me, as I I had been obsessed with Almodóvar films since high school, and it absolutely delivered with its unique 24 hr energy and rich aesthetic.

I’d recently befriended Chris Geddes from B&S, and on the night of their performance he invited my friend and I to ride up to the festival in their bus! It was a total fairytale moment for me, having moved from Texas to Scotland mostly because I love B&S so much.

I vowed that I would one day play Primavera…a dream that first came true in 2008 and is now coming true again. The folks at Primavera hold a very special place in my heart and have made Spain a home-away-from-home for me during my visits.

Many times over the past decade, I have looked at the festival’s incredible lineup and wondered if and when I’d ever be able to return, so I am extremely grateful to be making this announcement. Suffice to say, I think it’s the greatest festival in the world.

YOUR BIGGEST FAN was released on this day in 2006 🎂

This was the 3rd EP in what I consider the early part of Voxtrot’s career, marking the beginning of our time with record label Playlouder/Beggar’s Group.

The title track was inspired by an article I read in Vanity Fair, which drove home for me the degree to which scandal and shame force people to live inauthentic lives, and how viewing anybody up close — and thus seeing their complex humanity — can shatter our unrealistic expectations.

I wish had room to discuss all 3 songs in depth, but the other memory that is most alive for me is the recording of Sway (a song written as an elegy for a friend)…more specifically hearing Jared’s incredible string arrangement come to life in real time through the Tosca Quartet.

During this period we spent a lot of time in London, often living at the Columbia Hotel, which at that time was synonymous with rock n roll. Our room had 5 single beds (like The Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night!) and some of the late night conversations we had there made their way into the lyrics of the YBF EP.

It was an electrifying year, working with our new label and getting to see the music industry up close — something I’d dreamt of since childhood. It was the 5 of us together on an adventure, one which I now understand is so rare and special.

The initial inspiration for this song came from the 2015 documentary B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989, which paints a compelling portrait of the underground scene there during the highly creative era that preceded reunification.

Having spent my own formative chapter in Berlin, the film activated my nostalgia and got me thinking about the ephemeral power of zeitgeist, as well as the uncanny way in which life continually presents us with new adventures.

I don’t think there’s a concise word for this in the English language, but the mood this song evokes in me is: honoring the past while releasing it, so that we can receive what comes next with an open heart.

Another Fire is one month old today!

I started writing it in 2021 while sharing a studio space with a friend in a north Austin industrial park. The days were hot and long, but peaceful since the building was almost completely empty.

The demo was instrumental for a few months, during which time I was building out the song’s ghostly atmosphere. Once I started playing with lyrics, the theme of regeneration quickly came to the forefront.

Inspirations included a Hindu philosophical text on reincarnation (I was struck by the concept of all things returning to the eternal fire again and again) and a book about the birth of coffee shop culture in the UK, and how its emergence in post-WW2 Britain played an instrumental role in the birth of British rock n roll.

Due to global events at the time I was writing Another Fire, the theme of something new emerging from a challenging and heartbreaking time felt especially vital. As I write this post, my heart is once again heavy — it goes without saying that what is happening right now in the world is both challenging and heartbreaking.

When Voxtrot gathered in January 2022 to work on new material, Another Fire was the first song out of the gate — it really felt like the angel of collaboration was with us and it was wonderful to have that feeling with my bandmates again, as well as to witness their talents transform the song.
