The Latin American Student Association

We are the Latin American Student Association (LASA) of Azusa Pacific University.

The Latin American Student Association (LASA), a certified student organization of Azusa Pacific University, is a proactive multi-cultural group that is committed to celebrating the rich ethnic and cultural heritage of the Latina/o population. We seek to educate ourselves, and the greater APU community, in the history and culture of the Latina/o peoples while serving and advocating for Latina/os both in and outside of APUs student body via political and social strategies.

Congrats to all our seniors who have graduated! In light of celebration, we want to remember Bobby Lee Verdugo who passed away earlier today. Bobby was a leader who shared his story about pursuing justice even through challenging time at our Latinos Serving Latinos conference in 2014 and participated in the East LA high school walkouts in 1968 (https://www.backstoryradio.org/blog/bobby-lee-verdugo-and-the-1968-east-los-angeles-high-schools-walkout/). Thank you for all you did.

Katherine Enriquez (), a member of LASA wrote the story of her grandfather and dad:

“We can say my family story began with my grandpa from my dad's side, he came legally as a Bracero to the United States, and worked when the US farmers needed employees at low wages. When the bracero program ended my grandpa was sent back to Mexico and as his children grew up they began to see the family struggles. My father at only 14 years of age and his brother decided to cross the border to help their family out. My dad remembers clearly crossing the border and froze when he saw the immigration officers with weapons and dogs. His older brother who was with him kept yelling at him to run. My dad did not move so my uncle came for him as the immigration officers were approaching him and they ran together. My dad thought the dogs were going to rip him open, and he would die. They ran until were able to hide in grass and crawl with their elbows and knees. Once they were clear, they kept going with no water. Near San Diego once again they were chased by ICE. However my dad did not know freeways were two ways. so he ran across half of the freeway interrupting cars and finally feeling safer jumped what he remembers to be as bushes to find out there are other cars going the opposite direction! Thankfully, he was able to run through that to, get to LA, and later in life was able to become a Citizen and start his own family in the US.”

Lucero Denisse () is LASA’s Board Programmer, and this is her story:

Lucero Oceguera was born in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, MX in 1996. She and her mother came to the United States when she was just 2 years old. After being put on a bus headed to Mexico and almost being deported, their lives took a turn for the better. Growing up, she always had strong female role models who showed her the power of her voice and her actions, the beauty of intelligence, and the need for love and truth in the world. Because of those women who helped shaper her identity and those around her who believed in her potential, she was able to win a national scholarship, attend one of the most prestigious private high schools in the Bay Area, get accepted to and attend a private university in Southern California, graduate in December of 2018 making her the first in her family to graduate college, and become a naturalized citizen in 2012 giving her privileges and opportunities that very few get. She has endured hardships and difficulties in life for being both a woman and a Latina, but she has persisted nonetheless. She wishes to continue living out her pursuit of her unAmerican dream and redefine what it means to be successful as an immigrant in today’s society. ✊🏽👩🏽‍🎓🇲🇽💗✨

This story is from Mayra Nuñez (), one of LASA’s vice presidents. This is the story of her parents:
“Maria Etelvina and Jorge Alberto Nuñez met in Los Ángeles, but both immigrated from the country of El Salvador around the age of 18. They each helped pave the way to the US for their other siblings. The transition to the US from El Salvador was not easy with language barriers, finances, and other factors but they both managed to build a family. Maria Etelvina has worked as a housekeeper and Jorge as a mechanic since their arrival and have never stopped fighting for their children. —My mother and father have been what inspire me to continue fighting in life. I haven’t seen a work ethic and fire like my mother and father. I tear up thinking of people who treat my parents or immigrants like them any less than who they are. They embody hope, strength, love, and resiliency. I hope that people get inspired by this glimpse of their story and continue to learn about the immigrant population, because they truly are the hidden jewels of this country—(btw my mom makes the best pupusas, Hands down)”

This story is from Citlalli Prado (), LASA’s Commuter Cordinator. This is the story of her parents:
“Luis Alonso Prado and Imelda Martin met when they were teenagers a a café in San Miguel el Alto, Jalisco, México and slowly began to fall in love with each other. They immigrated in the United States in the late 90s after they got married in ‘96. They both woke up at 3 am to eat ramen and take the drive from El Monte to Long Beach as they worked as construction workers. Imelda wasn’t able to finish school due to her family not wanting to go and Luis graduated with a degree in computer science but never got the chance to use his degree. In 2011, Luis discovered that he had heart problems and agreed to have surgery for a pacemaker as he didn’t want to leave his wife and three kids.
In August of 2018, they both received their green cards and could finally see the family they haven’t seen more than 10 years.”

This story is from Lucero Denisse (), LASA’s Board Programmer. This is the story of her mother:
“Susana Valderrama is the second oldest of 7 children. Born and raised along the beautiful coast of Nayarit and Sinaloa in a small rancho called “La Goma”. She always had a dream of continuing her education and jumped at any opportunity to participate in and lead the community through shows, dances, and the weekly march around the town, standing in the front and holding the flag high and with pride. She first came to the US at the ripe age of 16 to take care of her little cousins and in turn help her family with bills garnering a financial responsibility that to this day she has not failed. She has two daughters who are proud beyond what words can express and a husband who cherishes and loves her dearly. “Sigue adelante y no te olvides de tus raíces humilde” is a phrase she repeats every day. She is an immigrant, a mother, a daughter, a wife, a servant leader, and most importantly a fierce warrior. She is her daughters biggest hero and reason for carrying on her hardworking legacy. ✊🏽”

“Leopoldo and Rosa Gonzalez met in Guadalajara, Mexico. They married young and started to made a life together. In the 1940’s, Leopoldo, in an effort to provide for his growing family of four, immigrated to the United States utilizing the Bracero Program. This was a Mexican Farm Labor agreement with the United States. He traveled all over the United States working for different farm owners, living modestly to bring the rest of the family to the US and send money home to them. When he was able he brought the rest of the family over and they settled in a small town in Northern California. Here is where their family continues to strive together and work hard to make their sacrifices worth something. Their legacy includes 7 children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. They inspire their family with their tenacious and hardworking attitude.” Mirella Pichardo () is LASA’s Co-LSL Conference Director, and this is her family story 🙂

Felíz ! Here’s a family story from a member of our board:

“Hector Acevedo and Rosalba Cardona met as teenagers in Medellin, Colombia and fell immediately in love. They immigrated to the United States with their newborn son, Alejandro in the early 1960’s. They worked hard, they struggled, and they thrived as they built their family from scratch in Los Angeles. Rosalba was an artist, and Hector the famous chef in the family. In 2016, Rosalba lost her battle with cancer and reunited with her Creator, her sister, and her parents. She left behind her two children and her three granddaughters, one of which is LASA’s Women’s Network Coordinator . Karina lives her life every day trying to make her Abuelita proud.”
