Happy Father’s Day to all you amazing dads out there! 🎉🙌🏼
You may have heard of how bone marrow transplants have saved lives. The stem cells in bone marrow are the same kind of stem cells found in a baby’s umbilical cord. These stem cells are called hematopoietic stem cells. Stem cells can also be found in peripheral blood and adipose (fat) tissue. Newborn stem cells have several advantages over these other sources of stem cells.
Newborn stem cells are the most pristine source of stem cells with a better ability to regenerate. Newborn stem cells involve an easy collection process whereas bone marrow transplant involve a more complicated procedure that can be very painful to the donor of the bone marrow stem cells.
Cord Blood collection is completely painless for baby & mom. Newborn stem cells have limited exposure to viral & environmental contamination compared to other sources. Matching requirements for cord blood stem cells is much more forgiving than bone marrow stem cells. A partial match is acceptable for a transplant with newborn stem cells; whereas bone marrow transplants require an identical HLA match between the donor and recipient of those cells in a transplant.
In addition, cord blood stem cells are unique in that they have lower risks of complications compared to bone marrow transplants. There is no need to harvest newborn stem cells like with bone marrow. Newborn stem cells have a lower risk of graft versus host disease, and finally there is better long term immune recovery with newborn stem cells.
Learn about the value of your child’s stem cells and join our Cord Blood Preservation presented by Dr. Winifred Lin Soufi on June 08, 2022 at 5pm Pacific Time or 8 pm Eastern Time via zoom.
