"The plan is to compare babies who failed a hearing screening with those who tested positive for CMV to babies who did not fail hearing tests, said Dr. Michele Caggana, director of the New York State Department of Health Newborn Screening Program."
This virus is a leading cause birth defects. Why isn't it screened more? While rare, about a fifth of newborns infected show symptoms such as hearing loss, or have longer term health issues, including developmental delays.

I met with Senator John W. Mannion’s office staff at Cafe 108 to thank them for their work as the Senate Sponsor of “Elizabeth’s Law” (S6287C), which has now passed both the Senate and the Assembly. Now it’s up to the governor to sign it into law to prevent the leading viral cause of birth defects, cytomegalovirus (CMV)!
