What is Rosacea?
Here is the dictionary’s answer:

1. a condition in which certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance.

But what’s really going on?
Let’s break it down. There are four subtypes of Rosacea. 1) Vascular Rosacea. 2) Inflammatory Rosacea. 3) Phymatous Rosacea. 4) Ocular Rosacea. (Actually, there are more, but these are the popular types)
I’ll work my way backward;

#4) Ocular Rosacea affects the eyes and is often left undiagnosed. Redness and a feeling like sand is in your eye. Maybe even recurring styes and scaly crusty stuff are at the root of your lashes. If you think you might have it, consult a physician right away.

#3) Phymatous Rosacea, or oil
Gland rosacea occurs when oil glands are overstimulated, causing the skin to thicken, such as the bulbous nose. This happens when this Rosacea is left untreated and is entirely preventable.

#2) Inflammatory Rosacea is easy to spot due to the chronic redness and an outbreak of bumps and pimples on the face. These bumps are different from traditional acne and need to be treated differently. Never attempt to extract these bumps. Vascularization usually occurs later in life. Think of “adult acne”.
All of a sudden, you start breaking out as an adult when you’ve never experienced acne before; it may be rosacea and is treated entirely differently.

#1) Vascular Rosacea is the frequent flushing and chronic skin redness. Some notice blood vessels start to appear across the nose and cheeks. Burning, stinging, swelling, dryness, and/or rough patches may also be present. Hyperactive nerves and blood vessels are to blame. The redness usually lasts 30 minutes and then goes away only to return. 

None of the forms of rosacea are fun, especially since there is no cure, and it seems to come and go without warning. Making things worse is sometimes treatments don’t last or provide enough relief. I’ll go over some options next, including dos and don’ts.
