Sarah Siddons is considered one of the greatest English tragic actresses, most known for her portrayals of Lady Macbeth and Hamlet.
Siddons first played Hamlet in 1775, and would go on to play Hamlet 9 times over the next 3 decades of her career. The radical nature of her portrayal of the character came from her deliberate choice to complicate the presentation of gender through the costume she designed for the role. She forewent breeches and instead opted for a design that was much more androgynous, a choice that sparked contemporaries of hers to begin to explore the constructed-ness of gender.
She is best known and revered for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth, which she first performed in 1785. Her interpretation of the character, which presented Lady Macbeth as a woman with strong sense of maternity and a delicate femininity as opposed to just a murderous, evil queen, astonished audiences and influenced other actresses/portrayals going forward.
What a neat idea for women's history month! Also, I didn't know who the first female actress to grace the stage was. Thank you Margaret for paving the way!
On December 8, 1660, Margaret Hughes made theatre history when she performed the role of Desdemona in William Shakespeare's Othello at Thomas Killigrew's new King's Company's Vere Street theater, making her the first woman known to perform on an English stage.
The decision to cast Hughes was so uprecedented at the time that all performances of Othello in which Hughes performed included a special pre-show announcement to prepare audiences for seeing a woman on stage. She went on to have a revolutionary, though short-lived career and lived a remarkable life that has been memorialized in books, plays, and movies including the 2004's Stage Beauty starring Claire Danes.
Stay tuned as we highlight other historical leading ladies each week in honor of Women's History Month

This is the student film I am CURRENTLY starring in. I am posting about this because these kids deserve all the extra help they can get (if this was for a big filming gig, I would be under an NDA and would not post about it until the media was released). We are already two days in, but I didn't know about the gofundme! So now I'm sharing it because these kids deserve it. Please click on the link, donate if you can, and if you can't, please share it ❤

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851) was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” which is considered the earliest example of the science fiction genre. She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother was the philosopher and feminist activist Mary Wollstonecraft.
Mary's mother died less than a fortnight after giving birth to her, which plays an active role in the Danielle Mohlman’s new take on the story of “Frankenstein.” She was raised by her father, who provided her with a rich education, encouraging her to adhere to his own anarchist political theories.
Until the 1970s, Shelley was known mainly for her efforts to publish her husband's works and for her novel “Frankenstein,” which remains widely read and has inspired many theatrical and film adaptations. Recent scholarship has yielded a more comprehensive view of Shelley's achievements. Scholars have shown increasing interest in her literary output, particularly in her novels, which include the historical novels “Valperga” and “Perkin Warbeck,” the apocalyptic novel “The Last Man,” and her final two novels, “Lodore” and “Falkner.” Studies of her lesser-known works, such as the travel book “Rambles in Germany and Italy” and the biographical articles for Dionysius Lardner's “Cabinet Cyclopaedia,” support the growing view that Shelley remained a political radical throughout her life. Shelley's works often argue that cooperation and sympathy, particularly as practiced by women in the family, were the ways to reform civil society. This view was a direct challenge to the men in her life. Mary Shelley was a Bechdel Test crusher in the Age of the Patriarchy.
