The original hoodie had balloon sleeves, however, to make the hoodie more exaggerated (especially since she needed to be SEEN on a stage), we made the hood and the sleeves even bigger for a more dramatic feel.

• CULTURE • for some time now I’ve been doing research on African based photography studios from the 1960’s. I found some gems from photographers like Malick Sidibe (Mail), Abdourahmane Sakaly (Senegal) + J.D. Okhai Ojeikere (Nigeria). I remember seeing those images and thinking how beautiful they were! When I was contacted to be apart of this shoot + given the theme behind it I saw it as a great way to honor those photographers and what they gave us in shooting everyday people from that era in a continent that was widely misrepresented. They gave us a true glimpse of what Africans looked like and we were (are) a beautiful people.

1960 was a hopeful year, for a lot of African countries so those images speak volumes of hope of a new life independent from colonial rule. I want to reflect on that time as we celebrate Nigeria’s 61st year of independence.

So much has happened since then + so much needs to be done, however, I believe in a new Nigeria I really do. Last year was a testament to the strength of the youth + their determination. To those who put themselves at risk and to the lives that were lost in an effort to see a new Nigeria this is for you as well.

At the beginning of this year, I promised myself I would take a month break in June to reset. I just had this feeling I would soon burn out. Well, that day never came till August. Long story short, COVID is a bastard + I was forced to take that time off. 🥲 Bruh, I was reminded I only have one body. I must appreciate it, be kind to it + take care of it.

So once I felt like I was back to myself again a few days ago, I put on some makeup, wrapped myself probably the biggest gele (head tie) ever + snapped some photos! THIS IS ME. BLESSED, GRATEFUL + HEALTHY.
