Being a black male is…difficult. I know this, and so does my school, The Baltimore City College. This summer I am running a program for incoming boys of color that helps them adjust to the rigors of of high school, while also providing them with a space to feel loved, accepted, but mostly seen and heard. Let me be the first to say, I have no idea what it means to be “black enough,” but I’m willing to try and find an answer with others. I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m willing to try. I guess, that’s important too. To prepare, this is my reading list. It’s good reading and it’s helping me a lot as I explore parts of myself I have shamed and locked away due to a belief that they aren’t worthy. Thank you to all of these wonderful authors as I begin this difficult but worthwhile journey.

I’m pleased to announce that I will be partnering with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Moore Center, and Darkness to Light to prevent the spread of childhood sexual abuse. The beginning of our collaboration begins with this year’s Envision conference where I will be presenting a virtual presentation of how superheroes can help survivors begin and continue their journey of healing. The event will take place June 25th and 26th. Blessed for this opportunity.

Last week, I traveled to my hometown of Peoria, IL to speak at the “Light 2024” conference. It was an amazing experience! The conference was so well ran, and everyone was truly hospitable. While my presentation “Heroes, Villains, and Healing” was well received, and the conference was well run and organized, what made the conference truly amazing is the fact that my mother attended the conference with me. She sat in the audience, listened to me speak for 70 minutes, and helped my distribute materials at my table afterward. I know it had to have been difficult to listen to her youngest son speak about his childhood sexual assault, but she came and supported me as a survivor and her son. She is an amazing woman and I am truly blessed to be able to call her my mother. Although the conference was not on Mother’s Day, it made me truly appreciate having her in my life.

Many of us are under the impression that there are good emotions and bad emotions. This is not true. Instead, there are emotions that control us, making us view our actions as either good or bad. Unfortunately, many of us believe that if we suppress emotions that are viewed negatively, they will go away. If we ignore them they will disappear. Instead, they only get stronger. The only way to heal is to accept the emotion, how they make you feel, and allow it the space needed to exist. Then (and only then) can you be free to return to a state of balance.
