News: The first woman to experience HIV remission remains free of detectable virus 30 months after stopping antiretroviral therapy ( ). In this National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study, a woman of mixed-race ancestry with HIV and acute myeloid leukemia received a stem cell transplant that included banked umbilical cord blood with HIV-resistant stem cells. She was able to stop taking ART 37 months post-transplant. Using stem cells from cord blood rather than from compatible adult donors increases the potential to eradicate HIV reservoirs in people of all racial backgrounds who require transplants for other medical conditions. This study was conducted by the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Network in collaboration with Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), StemCyte - A Global Regenerative Therapeutics Company, and the -funded AIDS Clinical Trials Group. Full study results are published in Cell Press: https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(23)00173-3
