Twas The Night Before Rizdvo
(adapted from the original poem written by Clement Clarke Moore).
Twas the night before Rizdvo (Christmas) and in this Ukie house,
The family all gathered to eat sauerkraut.
The didukh and kolach were nestled all snug in its place.
While varenyky (Pierogie) were cooking and so was some fish.
Borscht was still simmering,
the Kompot was on ice.
No one was moving,
not even the mice.
Women in their hystkas and the men in their caps,
had all awoken after a 2 hour nap.
With the food on the stiel (table) and the dyite (children) playing in hay,
We were all about ready to stand up and pray.
When out on the doroha (street), there arose such a clatter,
We all left the table to see what was the matter.
Away to the window,
Kutia flew like a flash!
We screamed "Lock all the doors and hide all the cash"!
And what to our wondering eyes should appear
But an old ancient sleigh and a bunch of reindeer.
With a little old Vladyko,
so lively and quick,
We knew in a moment, it was Sviatey Mykolay (St. Nick).
His reindeer all came as he sternly shouted,
"On Stefko and Vlodko, Petro and Pavlo,
On Josyf and Yurko, Myhash and Levko!”
Then out to the smokehouse,
the reindeer all flew,
With a sleigh full of kovbassa and some Salo too!
Down the smoke vent he came, with a leap and a bound,
Dancing a hopak and twirling around.
He did a short kolomeyka,
then went to his work!
He gave us some presents,
and then turned with a smirk.
We gave him horilka and some of Dido’s Slavko's old clothes.
Then we all sang Nova Rada
and up the smoke vent he rose.
We heard him exclaim as we took off our coats.
"Veselyh Svyat to all and to all, Dobranich!" (Happy Holidays and to all a Good Night)!

On February 24, 2022, Russia began an unprovoked, full-scale invasion and genocidal war against its peaceful neighbor, Ukraine, which unfortunately has been ongoing to this day. It has now been nearly two years of ongoing suffering and horror for Ukrainians, who have been heroically defending themselves and the world.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) verified a total of 9,369 civilian deaths during Russia's invasion of Ukraine as of July 30, 2023. Furthermore, 16,646 people were reported to have been injured. It is important to note that the complete count of Ukrainian people murdered and injured by Russians is not known, as there are temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine where people have also been injured and killed.
These numbers are sadly increasing every day and include Ukrainian teachers, writers, dancers, artists, athletes, elderly, and children. Their lives are taken with no reason by brutal aggression.
In addition, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), more than 6.2 million refugees fled from Ukraine to other countries (as of July 2023). There are around 5.1 million internally displaced people in Ukraine (as of May 2023). Approximately 17.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2023.
Last year, together with partners we organized fundraising concerts and performed in other festivals, concerts, and events to help raise money for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Together with our partners we raised $75,000. This year, we want to continue our fundraising efforts, as the needs of Ukrainians are great. Our effort goes towards supporting people of Ukraine who continue their fight and suffer loses daily.
Dancing is also a form of resistance and activism—we dance to show the world that we care about our sisters and brothers in Ukraine and that we stand with them. There are several dancers in Carpathia who are from Ukraine, have Ukrainian roots, and/or who have family and friends in Ukraine.
Thank you for helping and supporting Ukraine!
