Each article is kid friendly and contains links to definitions of words students may find complicated. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics started Illuminations in an effort to increase educators’ access to quality standards-based resources for teaching and learning math.
Students in middle school will find over 100 activities (e.g., virtual manipulatives, applets, and games). There are also Calculation Nation games wherein students can challenge themselves as well as opponents from anywhere in the world.

This hands-on experiment provides students with an understanding of the issues that surround environmental cleanup. In this activity, students and families create their own oil spills, try different methods for cleaning them up, and then discuss the merits of each method in terms of effectiveness (cleanliness) and cost. They are asked to put themselves in the place of both environmental engineers and oil company owners who are responsible for the cleanup.
This engineering curriculum aligns to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

The University of Louisville is a state-supported research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. MathTV is an incredible resource for instructors and students. Students benefit from seeing multiple approaches, and gain confidence in learning from their peers. The MathTV library contains over 10,000 videos, from basic math through calculus. Almost every set of videos has one conducted in Spanish, by a native speaker. Video instruction is asynchronous, and allows students to repeat, rewind, and review.

The Marshmallow Challenge is a team-building activity in which teams must compete to build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one meter of tape, one meter of string, and one marshmallow. It emphasizes group communication, leadership dynamics, collaboration, innovation and problem solving strategy. Foundations in Personal Finance is a program that GEARUP staff have been providing to KCMS students throughout this school year. It's purpose is to teach Middle School students to save, budget, avoid debt, spend wisely and invest. Foundations in Personal Finance uses real-life examples to teach concepts necessary to form good money habits early in life.

Learning Blade is a new program that GEARUP has just begun presenting to students. It is designed to provide engaging resources that will expose students to STEM related career opportunities and help them develop key skills as they move forward. This innovative approach to STEM education focuses on activities that can be utilized both in a self-paced game environment and as practice in academic classrooms.
The system is built on the concept of missions. Each mission highlights a people-centered problem that engages today's students, and shows how STEM careers and technologies solve these problems.
We hope that all students will complete the Intro to Computer Science module during this time of remote learning. Login information is as follows:
