DID YOU KNOW? ... that on July 14th, 1776 (just 1500 yards up the river bank from Hall's) a kidnapping occurred on the murky waters of the Kentucky river which historian Harry Enoch called “one of the most legendary events on the frontier.” The daughter of Daniel Boone, Jemima, along with F***y and Betsey, the daughters of another famous frontiersman Richard Callaway, decided to spend the day canoeing down the river. However, they were met by an unexpected fate. As they canoed too close to unknown territory, five Native Americans seized the girls and they were held captive in a remote camp deep in the Kentucky wilderness. Both Boone and Callaway led rescue parties to find the girls and after two days of tracking, Boone’s party of eight located the encampment. It only took the firing of a few shots in the air for the captors to flee and the girls were rescued unharmed. F***y Callaway ended up marrying Captain John Holder, who was a member of the rescue party. Captain Holder established Holders Tavern at the site where Hall's on the River stands today.

DID YOU KNOW? ... this unfinished portrait of Daniel Boone (image #1), completed in 1820 by Chester Harding, is the only known likeness of Daniel Boone that was painted from real life. At the time, Boone was 85 years old and only months away from death. Boone had to be steadied by a friend in order to sit for this portrait while the artist worked. Image #2 is the official portrait that hangs in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. and was commissioned to the same artist following the completion of the first (which was obviously used as the model for the official gallery portrait). Image #3 is an Engraving from 1861 of Daniel Boone which is displayed in the National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans by Alonzo Chappel.

"By blazing a trail through the Appalachian Mountains, Daniel Boone opened the West to white settlement and came to personify the national myth of the indomitable frontiersman. While supporting his family as a fur trapper, Boone survived deadly attacks by the Shawanoe (Shawnee) and other Indigenous groups determined to prevent further encroachment into their homelands. Undeterred, in 1775, he established Boone Trace, a pathway through the Cumberland Gap into central Kentucky. Three years later, the Shawanoe captured Boone and adopted him into the family of Shawanoe chief Blackfish (also known as Cot-ta-wa-ma-go or Mkah-day-way-may-qua). Renamed Sheltowee (Big Turtle), Boone learned the language, traditions, and spiritual customs of his adoptive people. He fled after five months to warn the settlers of Boonesboro of an impending Shawnee attack.
This first portrait image in this post was made near the end of Boone’s eventful life after several embellished accounts of his exploits had transformed him into national legend." NPG SMITHSONIAN

Fort Boonesborough, just around the bend from Hall's on the River, was a frontier fort in Kentucky, founded by Daniel Boone and his men following their crossing of the Kentucky River on April 1, 1775. The settlement they founded, known as Boonesborough, Kentucky, is Kentucky's second oldest European-American settlement.

In recognition of the major contributions by Native Americans to the Daniel Boone Festival from the first one in 1948 to this year’s diamond jubilee 75th celebration, the festival committee is proud to honor Rick Bird as our Grand Marshal. A leader among his people The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Rick has been performing with the Cherokee during Daniel Boone Festivals on and off for 60 years, since 1963.
Rick Bird keeps his tradition and culture alive through his powwows and the various festivals he has attended since the age of 6. The Daniel Boone Festival was his first as a fancy dancer for Isaac Welch in 1963. Since that time he performed with Richard Geet Crowe, and Walker Calhoun. Rick eventually started bringing his own crew to the Daniel Boone Festival.
Rick has proven himself as a champion Fancy Dancer, Grass Dancer, Hoop Dancer, Traditional Dancer, Southern Straight Dancer, and Native American Singer and drummer. He has also served as a judge representing the South Eastern United States as a judge for the World Hoop Dance Contest in Phoenix Arizona.
He also was a leader among his people The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Rick was elected 6 years as a Tribal Council Representative in the Painttown Community. He also served as Painttown Community Chairman and Chairman of Community Club Council Advisory to Tribal Council. Rick has served over 42 committees. Examples: Law & Order, Community Service, Business, Tero, Education, Enrollment, Southwestern Community College Advisory, and over 35 other committees for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Rick has represented 8 different Chiefs’ Administrations, including John Crowe, 8 years; Robert Youngdeer, 4 years; Jonathan Ed Taylor, 4 years; Joyce Dugan, 4 years; Leon Jones 4 years; Michelle Hick, 12 years; Patrick Lambert, 2 years; and Richard Sneed, 6 years, for a total of 44 years as representative.
Richard Bird, professionally known as Ric Youngblood in the Professional Wrestling World, spent over 30 years in the professional wrestling business. Working alongside such greats as Matt Hardy, The Rock -n- Roll Express, Wahoo McDaniels, Nature boy Buddy Landell, Barbarian, and Ivan Kaloff, just to name a few, Rick was well known in wrestling circuits.
Richard currently owns two Smoke Shops in Cherokee North Carolina, and continues to perform with his family at Powwows and Festivals as Birdchopper.
With great honor Rick accepts the title of Grand Marshal 2023 for the Barbourville Kentucky Daniel Boone Festival, October 1 – 7, 2023.
