Woo hoo, it's Fitness Friday!
We must do it all; the older we get, the easier it is to see why!
We need strong bones, muscles to support movement, and a healthy shape, leading to a positive self-image = strength training
We need a strong heart and lungs to support blood flow, oxygenation, good physiological chemistry, and to feel mentally and physically energized = cardio
We must be able to move in and out of different positions for a lifetime if we want to feel good and capable! Many people neglect the value of flexibility and mobility until their body parts start squawking at them, and no one wants that = stretching
Some people focus on one area of fitness neglecting the rest only to find that they have trouble down the road whether it is aching joints, tendonitis or they have trouble with endurance and stamina. They may find themselves with bone issues, additional body fat, or a lessening of strength to handle regular tasks like shoveling snow.
The body will inform you of your neglect in several ways, so let's be on top of it before the struggle. Wellness means taking special care when feeling out of sorts or ill.
Feeling unwell doesn't come at convenient times but you have to make the time and space to take the best care of yourself so you can be back in action as soon as possible.
Rest, nap, take walks, sip herbal tea, a hot bath, sauna and other relaxing activities can make the difference. Everyone is different in how they manage a forced time-out.
And, this is the time of year that sneezing, coughing types of illness increases so make sure you are doing all of the preventive things to keep yourself and others from the sense of un-wellness!
Today, be mindful of those things that you do...
Toe out when walking = tight hips, outside of your thighs are sore
Bad posture at work = sore neck, mid back and shoulders
A lot of sitting = tight hip flexors and sore back
Sleep on one side = sore shoulder

We've arrived at the end of the work week and there's that energized feeling that comes when we know we can get to weekend activities! But, fitness comes first at Fluidly Moving Body Works!
Yup, Fridays at 7 AM is strength class and everyone pulls out their weights and follows the plan for 30 minutes. As the trainer, I know the participants are well set for any activities over the weekend, and I always hope remnants of class can be felt on Saturday too - just how I roll, no apologies.
I am game to hold a 6:30 class if you and a few friends want to start this up. Strength on Fridays and it doesn't matter where you are starting from because you will improve along the way. The brain craves sweets during stressful times!
Worry/Stress ignites a chain of reactions in the body. Research conducted at Yale School of Medicine found that when stressed, sweet cravings are common for humans and animals. High-sugar foods are rich in energy and are a life necessity. So, the brain compels us toward sweets/carbs to further survival. But, do we really need sweets to survive???
Instead, prepare healthy snacks for work or in the evening so that you'll be less tempted to reach for a sweet treat dessert. Healthy snacks can be nuts, hard-boiled eggs, raw veggies, protein shakes, or anything but sugar.
You will survive longer and better without the sugar and carbohydrate treats!

Chill Out on Therapeutic Thursday! I mentioned we would be looking at brain waves and their purpose. Today, we begin with Alpha.
✨ Alpha Waves are your brain's way of saying "chill." When you meditate, these waves increase, helping you slip into a state of deep relaxation. Think of it like your brain shifting gears to calm down stress and boost creativity. Ready to tap into your inner peace?

Autumn and Winter are beautiful seasons but some of us struggle with the lessening daylight, the cold, and the inconveniences that come with snow and ice.
We all know it is coming - Autumn is already in full swing. So, if you haven't already, NOW, is a good time to plan how you will manage those times when you are down, unmotivated, or craving foods you don't need.
Create little enjoyable events/adventures for yourself, with family, or with friends. Create an evening plan as nighttime will seem long without ideas for how you will use the time. Plan simple things into each day for which you can look forward. Find reasons to get outside and enjoy something about the season directly.
Anita was prepared for a race! 🎉
But here's the twist—after months of training, fine-tuning nutrition, and hitting the pavement, you’d think the hardest part was over, right? Nope.
Tapering before the race is weirdly impossible. It’s like your body is still in ‘GO’ mode, but the mind says, ‘Take a break.’ 🧠💥
But when the body hits the brakes, the taper disappears and so does the race. This was Anita's experience when she was heavily hit with a fierce case of pneumonia only days before.
What else could Anita do after two days of sleep and then feeling as restless as ever but to take a short walk in race garb!
Whether you’re biking mountains or pounding the road, isn’t it funny how the hardest part is not the miles but stopping the momentum?
And sometimes the body takes us by surprise and decides how we will stop. So, we have to shift gears and do what it says - lay low!
A new week, a new reason to plan your mindfulness practices!
Everything requires planning which most often means looking ahead at upcoming appointments (meetings, doctor appts., massage), the forecasted weather, and acknowledging those day-to-day activities like meals and time with loved ones. Then when you have your sights on the week, put yourself on the calendar - to breathe deeply for 10 minutes, or walk in nature, stretch and roll, all to quiet your mind and body.
Be reflective and aware in these moments. How does stepping out of life's demands and into yourself feel?

Do you meditate? Meditation affects how the brain and nervous system function, giving you more clarity, stability, and calm energy. Meditation affects your brain waves: alpha, theta, beta, and delta.

When a personal training client comes in feeling incredibly stressed, drained, and like they are not up to exercise - BUT, they have arrived for their appointment...
What else could be done but Yoga Flow combined with conventional exercises built into the movements? Taking a loved activity and blending it with standard bodyweight exercise was a good answer!
The pattern was so appreciated that it was used for a few classes to benefit everyone.
Eek out the stress, energize the whole person, and remove focus from whatever else is going on in their lives so they can regain balance.
End September with a moment of reflection. What have you achieved this month, and what intentions do you want to set for October? Taking time to reflect helps us move forward with clarity and purpose.
What’s your intention for the new month? Anita is completing a half-marathon in October - have done the training, the taper is coming, healed from injuries and looking forward to moving toward a November race.

A warm bath with Epsom salts can be the perfect way to unwind and soothe sore muscles. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for an extra touch of relaxation. Some of my favorites are lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender.
Don’t forget to hydrate! As the weather cools down, we often forget to drink enough water. Staying hydrated is essential for overall wellness.
What does this mean? Work toward 50% of your body weight in ounces of water. At least get the 64 ounces your doctor would recommend no matter your body weight.
If you aren't even close, get more than you normally do....your brain, body, and blood flow will thank you for it!
