You are cordially invited to attend East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition-EBRPPRC Torture Awareness Month Movie Screening and Discussion event. Every June, human rights and faith organizations join together to mark Torture Awareness Month because on June 26, 1987, the nations of the world took a major step against the immoral and abhorrent practice of torture.
The ribbon for Torture Awareness Month is orange. The month is observed in June to mark the day in 1987 when the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect. The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) and other human rights and faith organizations use the month to raise awareness of torture and to examine its presence in institutions and society.
Join the Coalition on Sunday, June 23rd from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library @ Goodwood, Room 102, 7711 Goodwood Blvd, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70806 for a viewing of the PBS Frontline documentary, "Burden of Innocence" followed by a discussion on the permanent damage done to those touched by contact with the criminal justice system, even those who have been exonerated. Light refreshments will be served.
While celebrating Juneteenth never forget this reality. Slavery is an economic system and Louisiana is a slave state. Elections matter.

Thousands of parents are confronted with a trifecta of issues that happen every year when school shuts down:
1. They still have to work 1, 2 or even 3 jobs just to pay the rent and basic costs. The level of summer childcare is beyond the budgets of most families.
2. Children eat and eat a lot when they are home for hours. Parents struggle during weekends when growing children eat at will. Summer break is even harder when children often have friends and neighbors that often visit.
3. Short term programs don't serve the needs of parents who have to navigate costs, transportation and appropriateness of services.
Don't forget to update your child's library card!
