A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!
Did you know? Mourning doves are North America's most abundant and harvested migratory game bird! In 2022, the U.S. population was estimated at around 161 million. In Louisiana alone, 31,200 hunters harvested over 566,000 doves during the 2023-24 season!
Since 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has led a national dove banding program to monitor these birds and understand the impact of hunting. In Louisiana, LDWF bands doves statewide from July to August with unique metal leg bands.
Since the program began, over 37,000 doves have been banded in Louisiana, and more than 1,500 of those have been reported by hunters. The data collected is crucial for setting annual harvest regulations and ensuring the sustainable management of mourning dove populations.
Hunters who find a banded dove can report it at www.reportband.gov.
Keep an eye out for those bands and help us keep track of our feathered friends!

Artificial reefs are important to our Sportsmanโs Paradise as they create vital fishery habitat needed to support a healthy marine ecosystem. But how are they created?
danos, a family-owned and managed Louisiana-based energy service provider, and NATRX, a technology platform for creating high-performance, nature-based restoration and resilience, partner together to design and produce โCajun Coralโ and โOysterbreak.โ Both Cajun Coral and Oysterbreak are used in artificial reef and coastal restoration projects across the Gulf South region.
Yesterday, LDWF executive staff had the opportunity to tour Danosโ manufacturing facility and see first-hand how the process works.
Designed by technology company Natrx and 3D printed and installed by Danos, Cajun Coral are highly flexible concrete modules that are customizable for the habitat they will support. Oysterbreak are living shorelines made through concrete molds which can be quickly produced to create a mile of shoreline protection in just 30 days! Both restoration solutions harness the power of mother nature to strengthen our Sportsmanโs Paradise, providing ample fishing opportunities for all generations. Stay tuned on Wednesday to see the creation of a new artificial reef we canโt wait to share about! ๐
Are you a deer hunter looking for a new challenge and wanting to get more open season time in the woods? Then bowhunting could be for you.
LDWF education section biologists hosted a Bowhunting 101 class Saturday at the Waddill Wildlife Refuge in Baton Rouge to teach participants the basics of using a bow and arrow to hunt deer, including instruction on seasons, regulations, legal gear, tree stand demonstrations, shot placement, scouting methods, and basic hunting tips. The class also learned how to observe browse plants, or plants that have been used as food sources by game animals.
Sgt. Justin Lowry and Cpl. Dylan Armentor attended the Lake Charles Police Department and City of Lake Charlesโ National Night Out Community Event at the Lake Charles Civic Center on Aug. 6. Attendees had the opportunity to meet officers from different local enforcement agencies including LDWFโs Enforcement Division.

If you find a snake in your yard, you might feel scared and tempted to harm it. But wait! Snakes are an important and valuable part of our ecosystem. They prey on pests like rodents and insects. In fact, killing snakes around your home may increase rodent populations, ultimately attracting more snakes.
Contrary to popular belief, snakes do not seek out humans or pets for food. They prefer to avoid contact with people!
Remember, the vast majority of snake sightings are of nonvenomous species. Louisiana is home to 47 native snake species, but only seven of those are venomous.
If you spot a snake in your yard, the best thing to do is observe it from a distance and let it be. Most often, it will leave on its own to avoid human interaction.
If you're curious about the type of snake, check out our online Species Field Guide: https://buff.ly/3WIa3vQ

Whooping cranes are the most endangered crane species globally and are protected under state law, the Endangered Species Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

๐จ Exciting News for Waterfowl Conservation! ๐จ
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) has voted to allocate dedicated funding to Delta Waterfowl Foundation and Ducks Unlimited for the development and preservation of migratory waterfowl breeding grounds over the next three years! ๐ฆ๐ฟ
Starting from the 2024-25 fiscal year, both organizations will receive 50% of the total allocation annually through 2026-27. These funds will be used for protecting, restoring, and enhancing breeding habitat for migratory waterfowl.
Since 1965, LDWF has provided funding to support conservation of breeding-grounds habitat for migratory waterfowl and by statute allocates a portion of annual hunting license revenue for that purpose.
Thanks to Act 114 of the 2024 Regular Legislative Session, the Duck License, Stamp, and Print Fund now includes all proceeds from the sale of waterfowl hunting licenses, and should result in approximately $400,000 available for projects annually!
