A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!

Did you know? Mourning doves are North America's most abundant and harvested migratory game bird! In 2022, the U.S. population was estimated at around 161 million. In Louisiana alone, 31,200 hunters harvested over 566,000 doves during the 2023-24 season!

Since 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has led a national dove banding program to monitor these birds and understand the impact of hunting. In Louisiana, LDWF bands doves statewide from July to August with unique metal leg bands.

Since the program began, over 37,000 doves have been banded in Louisiana, and more than 1,500 of those have been reported by hunters. The data collected is crucial for setting annual harvest regulations and ensuring the sustainable management of mourning dove populations.

Hunters who find a banded dove can report it at www.reportband.gov.

Keep an eye out for those bands and help us keep track of our feathered friends!

Artificial reefs are important to our Sportsmanโ€™s Paradise as they create vital fishery habitat needed to support a healthy marine ecosystem. But how are they created?

danos, a family-owned and managed Louisiana-based energy service provider, and NATRX, a technology platform for creating high-performance, nature-based restoration and resilience, partner together to design and produce โ€œCajun Coralโ€ and โ€œOysterbreak.โ€ Both Cajun Coral and Oysterbreak are used in artificial reef and coastal restoration projects across the Gulf South region.

Yesterday, LDWF executive staff had the opportunity to tour Danosโ€™ manufacturing facility and see first-hand how the process works.

Designed by technology company Natrx and 3D printed and installed by Danos, Cajun Coral are highly flexible concrete modules that are customizable for the habitat they will support. Oysterbreak are living shorelines made through concrete molds which can be quickly produced to create a mile of shoreline protection in just 30 days! Both restoration solutions harness the power of mother nature to strengthen our Sportsmanโ€™s Paradise, providing ample fishing opportunities for all generations. Stay tuned on Wednesday to see the creation of a new artificial reef we canโ€™t wait to share about! ๐Ÿ‘€

Are you a deer hunter looking for a new challenge and wanting to get more open season time in the woods? Then bowhunting could be for you.

LDWF education section biologists hosted a Bowhunting 101 class Saturday at the Waddill Wildlife Refuge in Baton Rouge to teach participants the basics of using a bow and arrow to hunt deer, including instruction on seasons, regulations, legal gear, tree stand demonstrations, shot placement, scouting methods, and basic hunting tips. The class also learned how to observe browse plants, or plants that have been used as food sources by game animals.

If you find a snake in your yard, you might feel scared and tempted to harm it. But wait! Snakes are an important and valuable part of our ecosystem. They prey on pests like rodents and insects. In fact, killing snakes around your home may increase rodent populations, ultimately attracting more snakes.

Contrary to popular belief, snakes do not seek out humans or pets for food. They prefer to avoid contact with people!

Remember, the vast majority of snake sightings are of nonvenomous species. Louisiana is home to 47 native snake species, but only seven of those are venomous.

If you spot a snake in your yard, the best thing to do is observe it from a distance and let it be. Most often, it will leave on its own to avoid human interaction.

๐Ÿšจ Exciting News for Waterfowl Conservation! ๐Ÿšจ

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) has voted to allocate dedicated funding to Delta Waterfowl Foundation and Ducks Unlimited for the development and preservation of migratory waterfowl breeding grounds over the next three years! ๐Ÿฆ†๐ŸŒฟ

Starting from the 2024-25 fiscal year, both organizations will receive 50% of the total allocation annually through 2026-27. These funds will be used for protecting, restoring, and enhancing breeding habitat for migratory waterfowl.

Since 1965, LDWF has provided funding to support conservation of breeding-grounds habitat for migratory waterfowl and by statute allocates a portion of annual hunting license revenue for that purpose.

Thanks to Act 114 of the 2024 Regular Legislative Session, the Duck License, Stamp, and Print Fund now includes all proceeds from the sale of waterfowl hunting licenses, and should result in approximately $400,000 available for projects annually!

For more details, contact LDWF Waterfowl Program Manager Jason Olszak at [email protected].

In fact, it was so successful they had to add a second session after the first camp sold out on day one. Biologists from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, along with LDWF-trained Hunter Education Instructors, Aquatic VIP Instructors, Boating Safety Instructors and ALAS Archery Instructors spent time during both camp sessions to teach roughly 100 youth from ages 10-15 the basic skills needed to enjoy hunting, boating, fishing and archery safely. ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿšค๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿน

๐ŸฆชWe have exciting news for our oyster community on National Oyster Day!

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) is reopening the oyster season in designated portions of the Vermilion/Atchafalaya Bay Public Oyster Seed Grounds. This season allows for the bedding of oyster resources to private leases and is based on the annual stock assessment by LDWF biologists, recommendations by the Oyster Task Force, and public comments.

The Secretary of the Department can adjust closure dates based on harvest data or enforcement issues and take emergency action to reopen or close areas as necessary. Harvesters should consult with LDH prior to fishing due to possible water quality concerns.

The Louisiana Natural and Scenic Rivers System was developed to preserve and enhance Louisianaโ€™s abundant rivers, streams and bayous. The system encompasses approximately 3,000 miles of waterbodies throughout the state.

We encourage you to visit these beautiful sites โ€“ to paddle, fish, sightsee โ€“and bring along a camera to capture their natural beauty.

Louisianaโ€™s Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) teams dominated the Central Regional event at Benton County Quail Association in Bentonville, Arkansas! Our teams took the top overall spot in both Junior and Senior divisions, competing against teams from Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wyoming.

Louisiana fielded two teams this year: the Bayou Bandits representing South Louisiana, and team MASH (Marksmen Aim, Shoot, Hit) representing North and Central Louisiana.

Louisiana resident license holders can now become organ donors and display their donation status on their hunting and fishing licenses! ๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸŽฃ

This new initiative, driven by ACT 348 signed by Governor Landry, is a partnership between the LDWF and the LOPA - Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency. "There is a critical need for organ, tissue, and eye donation in the state. Our partnership with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries increases access to our donor registry and offers residents the opportunity to sign up to help save lives," said Brett Gordon, President and CEO of LOPA.

Hereโ€™s how you can become a donor:

โ–ช If you are a current Louisiana license holder, log in to the LDWF license portal and follow the instructions

โ–ช You will also have the option to become a donor when you renew or purchase your license for the first time

โ–ช Lifetime license holders can log into their LDWF account to become a donor. When ordering a duplicate lifetime license card, it will show your donation status.

Get started today and make a difference!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Purchase or update your license at LouisianaOutdoors.com.
