Happy Clementine Hunter Day! Today is Clementine Hunter Day in Louisiana! Declared a year ago, the idea to proclaim October 1st as Clementine Hunter day was promoted by Loletta Wynder, director of the Creole Heritage Center at Northwestern State. Wynder cited Hunter’s contribution to the state through her large body of artwork that resides in museums and galleries across the world. State Representative Kenny Cox of Mansfield stated that while Clementine was “small in stature, through her paintings and quilts, Clementine Hunter occupies a place at the pinnacle of American culture.”

Spider lilies are known by many names including equinox flower and red magic lily, a magic that is cleverly captured in Clementine Hunter’s Pinwheels (Spider Lilies). These beautiful flowers dotted the grounds of Melrose, allowing Hunter to capture their unique form in painting. The artist applied her own spin to the well-known flower, creating a spiral formation within the petals that adds a layer of movement to the piece. This technique echoes that of a pinwheel, taking after the title of the work. Pinwheels (Spider Lilies) was exhibited in 1985 at the New Orleans Museum of Art for their "A Centennial Salute to Clementine Hunter” exhibit, as well as at the International Folk Art Festival, Sailor's Valentine Gallery, Nantucket, Mass. in 1987. Originally painted for prominent collectors, Dr. and Mrs. Robert F. Ryan in the 1960s. The painting was later purchased by Shelby R. Gilley to be included in his private collection. After many years of enjoyment, Gilley's Gallery is now making the painting available to add to your private collection. The next piece from artist of the month is titled Around the Bend. This semi-large piece illustrates a quaint Louisiana landscape that is overgrown with vibrant greenery. A large tree takes up the focus of the scene as it tilts over a narrow body of water. The limbs of the trees hang down almost seeming to touch the sparkling blue of the stream but stop just short. This quiet landscape scene would hang perfectly in any living space in need of a new, artistic edition. Stop by to take a look at this large piece or check out our website to see more of Stephen Kimball’s other pieces.

This next piece from our artist of the month, , is a stunningly vibrant oil painting of a Chic-A-Dee perched on a tree limb. This simple nature scene is filled with the brightest oranges, greens, and blues that make the canvas pop with a certain sense of liveliness. The bright colors are briefly interrupted by the neutral colored, stagnant Chic-A-Dee that gazes out of the painting. Take a closer look to see the silhouette of another bird in blue towards the left of the painting. This lovely piece is sure to dress up any empty wall with its vibrant colors that seem to pop out of any space. Check out our website using the link in our bio or stop by to get a closer look at this eye-catching piece!
