I’m seeing video on a guy who wins the SEC 400 hurdles got DQ’ed for talking trash or celebrating. You are telling me with bat flips, straddling dudes on the basketball court letting your junk hang in the opponents face, and same with football - you are going to DQ a guy for talking s**t in track. Please tell me this is fake news.

Address the media issue in Sulphur.

1) I have never seen media on a baseball field (field of play) during the game.

2) Are we losing our sense of direction? Could a ‘dead ball area’ affect the outcome of a game? After the game, you tell the players, “Hey, I got a great picture of your ground rule double that should have been a triple.” But that ground rule double prohibited the winning or typing run to score. In the grand scheme of things, what is more important?

3) This ‘dead zone’ area is deemed dead regardless if media is occupying the area or not. Again, if you are the LHSAA, how do you explain that to a coach in the above scenario?

This is wild. Central won game 1 on Thursday. Their last hit was a double by Gene Harris in the Top of the 5th. We are now in G3, bottom of the 4th and Central has yet to get a hit since Top 5, Game 1.

Parents,

Over the past couple of months, I have heard a lot of you concerned about your 8th graders entering high school and athletics.

I’ve coached youth, varsity, and last year, freshman football. Freshmen is different because you CAN go from having a team of 20 to 70. For a 14 or 15 yo, it can be overwhelming. I hope the following will help.

Last year our year started with 74 players and 6 coaches. From day to day, we didn’t know if we were inside or outside based on the weather. For us to fully evaluate all 74 equally was not going to be easy. Here is what your son needs to know.

1. The more visible you are, the more you will be noticed. Can’t be shy and quiet unless you hit like Ray Lewis.
2. You cannot sit behind your teammates and expect the coaches to call your name.
3. If a coach ask for someone to fill in at receiver, GO. If a coach ask for a corner, GO. Play where the team needs you, not where you WANT to play.
4. If a coach can trust you, he will play you.
5. ENGAGE, engage, engage. Talking to your teammates, not paying attention to what the coach says is not engaging. Keep your eyes up and stay focused.
6. If you aren’t getting the playing time you want, get your butt in scout team and take that opportunity to show the coaches what you can do.

Be respectful, be coachable, and give the hardest and strongest effort you can give. If you can do that, you will be successful in football and life. As coaches, we want you to be a great football player and an even better person.

Hope this can get you guys a sense of what most coaches look for and I’m sure there are very good coaches out there that could add to this list.
