The supervisors for our incoming corps are excited and ready for their members to start! And it’s always fun when the supervisors include some Serve Louisiana alumni!

Congratulations to the ‘23-‘24 Serve Louisiana AmeriCorps members ! We appreciate your service, commitment, curiosity, and caring nature. Our state and our communities are better for all you’ve done these past 11 months! You really got some things done this year. We can’t wait to see what you do next!

This month’s professional development meeting looked specifically at issues around housing. We heard from a host of incredible speakers and organizations and got to visit to hear about the revitalization work happening there.

Last week, Serve Louisiana members gathered with fellow community members at McKinley Alumni Center to celebrate our incredible collective work of COPE - communities organizing for power through empathy. Thank you to our partners with for having us !

Dimitri Celis worked as a restaurant manager for eight years. When COVID hit the industry hard, Celis went back to finish his undergraduate degree.

“I knew I wanted to work in the nonprofit public service sector but didn’t know exactly what that looked like,” Celis recalled. His roommate connected him with Serve Louisiana Program Director Maggie Conarro, who guided him through the application process. One of the sites, Recirculating Farms, was doing innovative food systems and food access work out of a small urban farm in Central City. He applied, interviewed, and was accepted.

The November meeting looked at Equity and Education and included a visit from Dr. Press Robinson who - among many other notable accomplishments- desegregated the East Baton Rouge Parish School board in 1980. Thank you for joining us Dr. Press!

We’ve seen Serve Louisiana members pair off during their term. We’ve seen alumni and supervisors get married and have babies. But yesterday was a Serve Louisiana first when two current members got married !

Motivated by social justice, she has shifted from being a high school English teacher to a free agent and entrepreneur promoting radical change through holistic wellness, self-care and community building.

Everyone please give a warm welcome to Sarah, our new corps member serving at Baton Roots! Sarah started in September as our Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator.

If you've been out to volunteer the last month, you've definitely met her. She's the reason we have regular volunteer events on the calendar and beautiful flyers to promote our events.

She has big ideas on how to make volunteering with Baton Roots even better so stay tuned! Check our previous post for this week's opportunities.

Last week’s team meeting was all about learning about communities biggest assets - people! Relational meeting training, supporting others with COPE (communities organizing for power through empathy), and look at some of the issues impacting our communities.

We spent some time with our 23-24 supervisors last week! Supervisors are an integral piece of the members experience and development ! And it’s always special when supervisors are also Serve Louisiana alumni!

We're still recovering from sending off our 22-23 members, but we're excited for what's next for them! Back to school and full-time jobs at their sites for many. And another year of getting things done for others!
