In Loving Memory of Gay Town
It is with great sorrow that we share the news of the passing of one of St. Elizabeth Foundation’s founders, Marguerite Gay May Town. Gay passed away during the early morning of Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the age of 87. She died as she lived, well grounded in her Catholic faith and surrounded by her family.
Throughout her life, Gay was a beloved and well-known figure in the community of Baton Rouge for her tireless dedication to service and charitable work. In 1988, she and her husband, A. Hays Town, Jr. started the St. Elizabeth Foundation to provide support and care to pregnant women in Louisiana and adoption services for adopting couples.
In St. Elizabeth Foundation’s early days, Gay led the way towards ethical and responsible adoption work. She did the work of a case worker, even traveling out of state to help women in a crisis pregnancy. She took women to doctor appointments and found housing for them. She was also the driving force behind the annual gala, our largest fundraiser, for 20 years. The staff and Board of Directors of St. Elizabeth Foundation relied on her judgement to ensure that St. Elizabeth’s was always going in the right direction. She was a constant presence at St. Elizabeth Foundation. Up until her passing, she was still attending board meetings and weighing in on a cause that was dear to heart.
Because of the work spearheaded by Gay Town, St. Elizabeth Foundation has placed over 600 babies into loving and permanent families. Her legacy will live on within each one of these families and the impact of her work will be greater than she could have ever imagined. She will be greatly missed by all of us at St. Elizabeth Foundation.
Gay is survived by her loving husband, A. Hays Town, Jr., their 6 children, 21 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 29th and will include visitation from 10:00 to 12:00 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, followed by mass at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send donations to St. Elizabeth Foundation, 8054 Summa Avenue, Suite A, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

Counseling is such an important part of the process of a birth parent making an adoption plan. The law requires at least 2 separate counseling sessions before a parent can voluntary surrender their parental rights. However, because we believe that emotional and mental health is just as important as the physical health of our birth mothers, St. Elizabeth offers a lifetime of free adoption counseling to our birth parents.
