225 Magazine BEST OF voting is live. Let’s talk about it. It’s no secret we generally hate “BEST” culture. It’s a silly premise to begin with when discussing subjective things, and then to establish a best by open (unlimited) vote of the general public, is reckless at best. This is why you’ll often hear us on the podcast, say (or even correct people occasionally 😬) “favorite.”

We’re flattered to have been nominated, but that category alone is proof that “best” is silly. There’s more than a few homies who got nominated, that are all extremely good follows, and all serve different purposes. There’s also a few that are astonishingly not there. And honestly, every one of them probably deserves your vote over us. “Don’t confuse us for people who are good at this” is way too accurate. There’s folks in that category that are actually good at this.

The real gripe is year after year, how predictable this list gets. Sure, there may be a few upsets. The order might get shook-up a little. But the vast majority of the food categories are pretty much sewn up before voting even starts. For a litany of reasons, many of which aren’t the magazine or staff’s fault, the same names are gonna end up in that winner issue that were there last year.

Here’s what we encourage y’all to do:
1) Go vote. You can’t expect change if you aren’t at least participating.
2) While you’re voting, start noting. All those nominations you might not have heard of. Or have heard of but have just been putting off trying. At least a few people loved them enough to nominate. Go try those new places! We can’t keep saying “I wish 225 had new stuff” and then not actually supporting the new stuff. Sure, you can keep visiting those old reliable spots, but we promise you Superior Grill and CC’s Coffee are gonna be ok if y’all switch it up and try a new spot every now and then.
