Today in History: 1901 - Annie Edson Taylor, at the age of 63, goes over Niagara Falls in a barrel (yes, on purpose!) and survives with nothing more than a small gash on her head! Annie was a longtime resident of Bay City and spent the majority of her life trying to come up with ways to get rich, in order to live among the elite. After her daring success at Niagara Falls, she spent a number of years lecturing about her experience on Water Street, between 4th and 5th St. in Bay City, charging an admission of 10 cents. She claimed to be much younger than she was. In 1921, Annie Edson Taylor admitted herself to the Niagara County Infirmary and ultimately died penniless at the age of 82.
For more information about Annie Edson Taylor, you can search our digitized records of The Bay City Times on our website at https://www.baycountylibrary.org/research/bay-city-times.
