As many of you already know, the tail wheel strut was in need of replacement after discovering an internal issue. We decided to send it to our friend in Lithuania who is a reputable aircraft mechanic, to see if a repair would be possible. Unfortunately after further inspection he has deemed the strut inoperable. The good news is we now have two potential leads for a replacement strut. We'll keep you all updated as we find out more.

More progress is made after another busy night at the Yak Shack. The wires for the pitot tube heat have been routed through the strut. The right side wing flap has been installed along with all new bearings and hardware. The actuator for the flaps has also been hooked up and will soon be ready for testing.

Craig made sure to take advantage of the nice weather we had earlier in the week to do some painting. All of the strut support bars and fittings have been painted in Sky Blue. These bars mount about halfway up the struts and support the strut to the wing.

The handle on the stick controls the brakes. By squeezing the handle it ports air to both wheels at the same time. An air differentiating valve under the floor will port air to one wheel or the other depending on how much you're pressing on the rudder pedals.

The air control manifold is responsible for starting the engine. It's located on the rear engine gear casing and controls high pressure air from the tank to the cylinders through a series of valves. The air is ported into the cylinders after top dead center on the power stroke. This rotates the engine around, and then all that's left to do is add fuel and turn on ignition to have a running engine.

A pneumatic ram located in the wing root operates the wing flaps. The flaps are controlled by a lever located on the left side of the cockpit and can be set in any desired position.

[1 of 4] Welcome to (based at Bayport Aerodrome)’s four-part mini-series on the pneumatic system used in the Yak12. Make sure to check out all 4 parts in our mini-series!

Like many Russian airplanes, the Yak12 is pneumatic—not hydraulic. The air system operates the flaps, brakes, and starter. A port located on the left side of the fuselage allows the airplane to be ground charged before flight, while an air pump (located on the accessory rear case drive of the engine) charges the tank during cruise flight in about 15 minutes. This makes for a very efficient and reliable system.

Bayport Aerodrome Society is the home of the 1955 Yak12 currently undergoing a full restoration. Follow along here or on the Yak12’s page Restore the Yak12 (or on Instagram). Here we have the fuel tanks that are almost ready to be installed in the airplane. Both tanks have been flushed, inspected, and all fittings have been cleaned or replaced where necessary. These tanks in particular are originally from a PZL-101 which is the Polish version of the Yak12 and have a capacity of 23.7 gallons (90 liters) each.

Big thanks to everyone at Bayport Aerodrome Society who has lent a hand (or an audience!) towards the success of this restoration.
