What do the clicks or counts mean?

· Sievert (Sv) is the unit for absorbed dose

1Sv = 1000 mSv = 1,000,000 mSv (smallest unit commonly used)

· We are exposed to radiation from naturally occurring radon in the air, from outer space and from medical devices. This background radiation is measured in units called millisieverts (mSv).

· The average dose per person from all sources is about 10 mSv per year. Can be higher due to medical imaging.

· 8 million μSv is fatal, 50 million μSv dose @ Chernobyl reactor hall, Time to fatal exposure is 22 seconds!

· Record how many clicks pass in a minute (CPM) and plug into formula below

μSv = CPM (Counts per Min) X 0.005(sensitivity coefficient)
