FATHER, NON-CUSTODIAL PARENT VISITATION REMINDER: Dads who have a standard possession visitation order for their children should note that this weekend (May 31) is a 5th weekend of the month, then, this year, Father's Day Weekend falls on the 2nd weekend, in between the 1st and 3rd weekends in June that you already get, so you may want to check your order because you likely have the right to possession of your children for the next four (4) consecutive weekends.

*subject to any proper and timely designations made by the custodial parent that could affect these weekend periods of possession, excluding Father's Day Weekend.

* READ AND BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR CUSTODY ORDER. If you need assistance, reach out to your local family law attorney for clarification and guidance!

Kids need both parents, who can both act and conduct themselves as appropriate parents.

The halls inside of a courthouse can be a very humbling place when controlling, bullying, intimidating, and even physically violent spouses or opposing parents realize they are no longer in control, and that a judge or jury will decide their fate for them. This is a man begging for his wife’s forgiveness inside Divorce Court in Chicago, circa 1948.

The practice of law is not a job, it is a profession, which carries great responsibility. This is especially true with a family law attorney, as the client entrusts the attorney to provide guidance, leadership, and practical advice to assist the client in protecting their most-precious assets - their families, children, and finances. This responsibility weighs heavily on the hearts and minds of myself and my paralegal extraordinaire, Pam Wolfe, and is not something that we take lightly, nor for granted.

In 2015, I was appointed to represent two young girls in a CPS case. Subsequently in 2020, I was also appointed to represent their curly-haired baby sister. Today, the older girls (now teens) were adopted and made permanent members of their forever family, with their baby sister in attendance, who had already found her forever home with another family. These two families are committed to ensuring all 3 sisters remain in frequent contact. In this cruel, evil, and unfair World, let THIS remind all of you that there IS still good out there, that guardian angels DO exist, and fairy tales DO come true. I witnessed it myself today, all of which would not have happened without the persistent care, love, and dedication from the girls' Guardian ad Litem, Dorothy Stanley. ❣️

Lincoln’s ageless advice to young attorneys. (1850)

“I am not an accomplished lawyer. I find quite as much material for a lecture in those points wherein I have failed, as in those wherein I have been moderately successful. The leading rule for the lawyer, as for the man of every other calling, is diligence. Leave nothing for to-morrow which can be done to-day. Never let your correspondence fall behind. Whatever piece of business you have in hand, before stopping, do all the labor pertaining to it which can then be done.

Extemporaneous speaking should be practised and cultivated. It is the lawyer's avenue to the public. However able and faithful he may be in other respects, people are slow to bring him business if he cannot make a speech. And yet there is not a more fatal error to young lawyers than relying too much on speech-making. If any one, upon his rare powers of speaking, shall claim an exemption from the drudgery of the law, his case is a failure in advance.

Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser -- in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker the lawyer has a superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.

Never stir up litigation. A worse man can scarcely be found than one who does this. Who can be more nearly a fiend than he who habitually overhauls the register of deeds in search of defects in titles, whereon to stir up strife, and put money in his pocket? A moral tone ought to be infused into the profession which should drive such men out of it.

…Resolve to be honest at all events; and if in your own judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer. Choose some other occupation, rather than one in the choosing of which you do, in advance, consent to be a knave.”

The tough cases with the happy endings make it all worthwhile. Happy Adoption Day, baby girl! 👏

Gender reveals are so 2000-and-late. When they're starting to step-up the game to baby-daddy reveals, make sure you have the right family lawyer in your corner. Baby-daddy roulette can end up being a very expensive game to play.

I wonder if today's kids are required to read (then watch) classics such as this. If not, that is a shame, because I believe experiencing stories like "Twelve Angry Men" (1957) and "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) likely planted the seed, that grew into the desire, for me to become an attorney.

Seems like an increase in adult adoptions this year. This young man wanted his stepdad to adopt him so they could share the same last name. To me that’s a job well done by the stepfather. Being a stepparent can be a thankless job but it can also be the best job ever. I had a little fun with young man’s fiancé. While her beau was under oath I asked her if she had any questions for him. She blushed but had no questions. With all the problems that I routinely see these adoptions are a great change of pace. I love adoptions!!

Always good to start the day with some “happy” business. This private placement adoption was just the thing
The prayers of this nice couple have been answered and this little boy now has a loving forever family. I love adoptions !!
