As we celebrate the birth of our nation today, we applaud the brave service members of our military branches who tirelessly protect our freedom each day. Happy birthday, USA – home of the free because of the brave.
In my opinion, there are a few Federal Holidays that have a tangible connection to our present-day society and meaning for all Americans. One of them is Juneteenth. June 19th is celebrated as “Juneteenth,” in honor of the final actions to the emancipation of enslaved people throughout the U.S.
The strength and determination of those African American men, women, and children who endured slavery deserved more than the speedy enactment of a Juneteenth law possessing such seriousness and significance. The timing of Juneteenth is not related to President Lincoln’s signing of The Emancipation Proclamation. Actually, Juneteenth occurred two and a half years later, when Union Troops marched into Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War was over, and enslaved people were now free!
I believe the value of this holiday is lost unless we allow ourselves time to consider how fierce the fight for equality is for people who survived the complete and utter horror of slavery. While the Union Troops carried the great news, it was only the foundation that would allow future generations to build a life and contribute to all aspects of society in spite of continued personal, social, and economic discrimination. This holiday chronicles the human potential of an extraordinary people deserving a celebration for what they have achieved and accomplished as a benefit to themselves and our nation.
Happy Juneteenth!

Doesn’t this picture say it all? The Labor Day Parade was a major event in 1882!
At a time when there were few benefits for laborers (that’s being diplomatic, folks), setting aside one day to demonstrate appreciation for the working class was epic! Being careful not to apply our modern values on history, I have to say, it was a great beginning. Perhaps the celebration in 1882 is what prompted so many labor and safety laws that would follow. Our current work and work environments are a dream for the 19th century worker.
Thank you to all the BTAS employees helping keep our nation safe and secure. We hope you have a great Labor Day weekend!

This 4th of July gives many of us the opportunity to celebrate with our families and loved ones again, after a long year of turmoil. It is perfectly suited for Independence Day, a time to commemorate being alive in this great country we call home. During the festivities, I hope we all appreciate and remember the freedoms we enjoy and the importance of spending time together.

Each Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day originates from the Civil War, which historians now estimate claimed up to 850,000 men. Like today, those losses made a real and tangible impact to families and communities.
Much like our own experience with losses felt from the Vietnam War, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the Gulf War, and other conflicts in the Middle East, we know war has a lasting impact. As we consider the sacrifice of life in service to our Nation, and the painful loss experienced by their families, our thoughts of them and expressions of gratitude will be the highest form of reverence for them on this day. May God Bless our fallen Veterans and their families.
