I would like to say this doesn't happen but sadly I have seen it over and over.

IMAGINE IF YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER SAID THIS.. "YOUR CHILD CAN'T READ". Sometimes these are "littlies" in Year 1 or 2 who have already been "classified". This is not fair to them or their parents. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy for many children and their parents. The ONLY things that can stop a child, who demonstrates normal intelligence and can plan and carry out complex thoughts from learning to read, include an eye-sight problem, a hearing problem, an intellectual problem, a lack of schooling through illness etc. or a VISUAL PROCESSING PROBLEM. Almost all of the sensory information that we receive is through our eyes, so if that information is not processed accurately, our brains cannot "work out" what we are seeing. Irlen Syndrome is a Visual Processing Disorder caused by the light that enters our eyes. Specifically, some of the colours in light. Did you know, in a recent study, about 50% of participants with both Irlen Syndrome and ADHD no longer met the criteria for an attention deficit diagnosis after they started wearing their Irlen Spectral Filters? Addressing the Irlen Syndrome with Spectral Filters eliminated the ADHD symptoms, suggesting a significant amount of misdiagnosis when understanding attention challenges among people with visual processing problems. People with Irlen Syndrome are especially affected by artificial light sources like fluorescent and LED lights. These types of artificial light sources tend to have dramatic spikes at specific points along the visual spectrum, unlike natural light which makes a smooth curve. Irlen brains don't like these spikes! They cause more discomfort and difficulty functioning for people with Irlen Syndrome.

I am not one that asks for much. I am currently in Maui helping out at one of the disaster sites if you could send up a little prayer for these people. Nothing really happens until it happens to you and these people are amazing. Please consider donating to a vetted site. I was talking with one agency yesterday that is helping people pay mortgages. It is a small local group but yet they gave out over 10 thousand in assistance of there own money. The money went to keep people housed or to pay for a house that no longer exists. It is also currently planned to allow some to return on the 25th of this month. That will be a very hard emotional day for many. Please keep them in your thoughts.

I just got back doing a screening of a client that has been having headaches/migraines for years she said that she has tried much and nothing has helped. I did her tint eval yesterday and to make sure that color was right I had her sit outside for close to an hour. When she had to leave I asked her how comfortable her lenses were and she was better then when we had started. Congratulations.

Some exciting things are happening at Irlenpdx this summer. I just got back from a homeschooling conference spreading the word about Irlen syndrome and light sensitivity. As a result I am getting ready to make a trip to the coast to screen some kids and adults. Met some truly wonderful people. I also got a few people interested in becoming an Irlen screener. If anyone is interested in a screening or tint eval we should get started soon.

All I can say is Ahhhhhh. Yesterday I got my Irlen sunglasses. I put them on and everything just relaxed. Then of course the next day it rained. But it wouldn't be Oregon if it didn't rain.

Has anyone had the experience of an HOA saying that you couldn't put up tint on your windows. I am just curious what others have done. I am in a HOA that can disallow certain colors
you can paint your house, if you are going to add a structure that is visible, and of course no non functioning vehicles. I get that but does anyone know if it is legal for an HOA to be able to say what your curtain color can be?

Sadly I still read about people with light sensitivity who are doing everything the medical and optical community ask without relief. I was reading a post where they had symptoms that fit Irlen syndrome and yet was never given that as an option to try. This was after they said the doctors ran out of options. Someday my wish is the medical and optical community will see that asking the Irlen institute to place a non invasive tint on glasses will become a standard part of their tool box. This has no side effects except comfort, and no long lasting effects if it isn't the right fit.
