Facebook and Instagram users in the EU will soon have the option to turn off Meta's AI-powered recommendation system. This is the algorithm that determines which Reels, Stories, posts and search results you see. 🇪🇺

ALL our social feeds these days are 'personalized' based on previous activity and interests. That is, selected for you based on every single data point that Meta has harvested from you.

Meta has been very aggressive with pushing its AI-powered discovery engine, again emulating what has made TikTok so successful.

As much as 20% (often more!) of the content that you see in your Facebook and Instagram feeds are what's called 'unconnected.'

That is, posts by people/pages/accounts you don't know.

If you've been wondering why you hardly see any content in your feeds from your actual friends and people and businesses that you've chosen to follow on Facebook and Instagram, this is why.

Meta is trying to know you better than anyone on the planet by predicting what you might like to see... to entice you and addict you further so you spend even more time on their platforms. 😖

You know, because 'eyeballs are monetizable.' 👀💰

BUT!! Due to a pioneering new set of EU digital regulations under the Digital Services Act (DSA), now people in the 27-nation European Union will have more control over what they see in their feeds, such as posts *only* from people they follow and in chronological order.

Also, search results will be based only on words users type, not personalized based on previous activity and interests.

EUROPE TAKES ON BIG TECH. DOES THIS MEAN CHANGES ARE COMING FOR U.S. USERS?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Possibly. Probably!

This new 'off switch' is also available to EU users on TikTok, Snapchat and other tech giants like Google and Amazon.

Are you a Facebook user? You have one month left to apply for a share of this $725M settlement Meta is paying to settle a lawsuit alleging the world’s largest social media platform allowed millions of its users’ personal information to be fed to Cambridge Analytica.

SCAM, BEWARE
You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. Typically, when checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for any charges to your room).
You go to your room and settle in. All is good.
The hotel receives a call, and the caller asks for (as an example) room 620 - which happens to be your room.
The phone rings in your room. You answer, and the person on the other end says the following: 'This is the front desk. When checking in, we came across a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.'
Not thinking anything wrong, since the call seems to come from the front desk you oblige.
But actually, it is a scam by someone calling from outside the hotel.
They have asked for a random room number, then ask you for your credit card and address information.
They sound so professional that you think you are talking to the front desk.
If you ever encounter this scenario on your travels, tell the caller that you will be down to the front desk to clear up any problems. Then, go to the front desk or call directly and ask if there was a problem.
If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone tried to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee.
