Are you Deficient!?

Micronutrients are comprised of vitamins and minerals that have important functions in the body. How do you know if you’re deficient ?

Vitamin B12➡️ water soluble vitamin that plays important roles in enzyme activity and folic acid metabolism. This means that all energy yielding pathways in the body need b12 in order to work. A deficiency can lead to anemia and degeneration of nerves. Commonly seen in patients using prolonged proton pump inhibitors and inflammation of the gut. Also people who follow a vegan diet can see deficiencies.

Folate➡️plays important roles in red blood cell and DNA synthesis. Deficiencies can lead to anemia, mood disorders, fatigue and the deficiency is linked to low immune function and cardiovascular diseases. Oral contraceptives can deplete this vitamin.

Vitamin D➡️this vitamin is required for bone and teeth formation, immune function, endocrine function and regulating mood. Most common deficiency is lack of sun exposure. Deficiency can cause stunted growth, osteoporosis and has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes type 1 and 2, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease and other inflammatory diseases.

Magnesium➡️ important for cellular metabolism and supports muscle contraction, bone development and clotting of the blood. A deficiency may be caused by excessive alcohol intake, use of diuretics, excessive sweating, hyperparathyroidism, chronic renal failure, and malabsorption syndromes. A deficiency can cause body weakness and followed by fatigue, irritability, mental confusion and insomnia. This can also affect the heart and cause irregular heartbeat.

Calcium➡️ mineral required for bones and teeth. Also necessary for muscle contraction, nerve impulse, and blood clotting. Deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, prolonged bleeding time, abnormal muscular contraction, and abnormal heart rhythms. Deficiency is also linked to high blood pressure, colon cancer, and preeclampsia.
