💪Today is MELANOMA Monday and the start of SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 📖

- Melanoma is one of the most deadly skin cancers - thankfully it is less common than other forms of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
- Over 70% of melanoma arise on normal looking skin NOT from a pre-existing mole 👀
- Melanoma can be cured when detected and treated at early stages 👏
- Some Risk Factors for melanoma: unprotected and excessive UV exposure and prior tanning bed use, having many moles and fair skin, a family history of melanoma and skin cancer, weakened immune system, genetics

WHAT CAN YOU DO???

✅ Know the ABCDEs of melanoma 👇
✅ Check your skin and your loved ones on a regular basis so you can identify changes.

CHEILITIS or inflammation of the lips = dry, cracked, peeling, itchy, fissured, bleeding, chapped lips

Skin on the lips is very easily affected by the environment including wind, sun, cold and chemical ingredients that act as irritants or allergens.

The lips lack the outer layer the skin on our body has as well as oil glands.

✨Follow these tips to keep your lips in great shape year round:

👄 Don’t pick - the skin on the lips is already thin, removing extra layers allows ingredients to pe*****te deeper and also decreases the lips natural barrier of protection against environmental stressors and infections
👄 Try to avoid licking the lips - saliva contains enzymes that increase irritation of this sensitive skin
👄 Drink lots of 💧- remember the lips need extra hydration as they lack those oil glands!
👄 Go for ointments or balms that help lock in moisture and repair the barrier - ingredients like: white petrolatum, lanolin, glycerin, dimethicone are great. My go to 👉 Vaseline or aquaphor throughout the day.
👄 Stay away from the flavored, fragranced sticks and balms at the checkout - these often have many irritants, preservatives and chemical ingredients. They look fun but can contribute to a vicious cycle.
👄 SPF all day - the sun can cause irritation and burns year round ⛷️ . The lips are not an uncommon location for precancers and skin cancers on the lips can sometimes be higher risk.

✨ 👉 R E T I N O I D S 👈 ✨

Avoid some common mistakes and get the most out of that liquid 🥇

1. Never apply your retinoid to wet/damp skin- wait at least 30 minutes (if possible) after washing. Damp skin allows deeper absorption of the retinoid increasing irritation.

2. Don’t apply too much - this isn’t moisturizer, it’s an active ingredient so a little goes a long way.

3. Dab the pea-sized amount of medication on the outskirts of the face and rub in from out to in. This decreases medication from pooling in more sensitive areas such as around the nose, mouth and folds of skin.

4. After allowing your retinoid time to sink in, apply moisturizer to lock in hydration, create a barrier and decrease irritation.

5. The #1 mistake - starting your retinoid too many nights per week. Start your retinoid at 1 night/week. Gradually increase the number of nights per week slowly over many weeks adding a night every few weeks. This gives your skin time to acclimate while avoiding common side effects such as peeling, itching, redness and burning.

👏 How to differentiate between some of our favorite acids 👉

👏 Choosing how and when to incorporate these ingredients into your regimen can be confusing
👏 Always start with a SINGLE ingredient/product - start SLOW at once to twice weekly and gradually increase the number of times per week slowly

👏 When do we recommend these ingredients:
1. Glycolic acid: our favorite chemical exfoliant - anti-aging, dark marks, wrinkles
2. Lactic acid: rough/bumpy skin such as keratosis pilaris, dry and cracked hands/feet, gentler chemical exfoliation
3. Azelaic acid: dark marks, redness and inflammation such as rosacea-prone, melasma
4. Salicylic acid: oily skin and clogged pores of acne-prone skin, rough/bumpy skin

📖 KELOIDS are firm, raised scars that occur after skin injury such as a pimple, ear piercing, surgery, and tattoos. Unlike other types of scars, keloids grow BEYOND the borders of the initial injury and the body continues to make too much scar tissue. There are treatment options, including surgery that can be used in certain locations on the body BUT it is important to know that keloids can regrow and regrow larger if additional treatments aren’t used.
👉 This patient is 4 months post surgical excision of her keloid 👏. During her healing period we utilized topical medication, steroid injections and compression earrings to help prevent regrowth. Her treatment with regular use of a compression earring will continue for at least a full year.
Not all locations on the body are amenable to surgery. Be sure to see a for evaluation and treatment options.

👉 I recommend that all people perform regular self skin exams, but what are you looking for?

❌ A new spot
❌ A changing spot
❌ An “ugly duckling” or a spot that looks out of place in comparison to your other moles
❌ For spots with pigment - the ABCDEs
❌ New symptoms- crusting, roughness, bleeding, tenderness
✅ Signs of skin cancer are not always obvious and most skin cancers are not very symptomatic. If you don’t check your skin periodically you may never notice the worrisome changes.
✅ Schedule a skin check with your if you have any concerns, have a history of skin cancer, have risk factors for skin cancer and/or just want a baseline exam and want to learn more about skin health.
