🍁FALL/HARDY/GARDEN MUM INFORMATION 🍁
There have been a ton of questions about “mums.” We will share what information that we have gathered over the years of growing them.
1. Fall/Hardy/Garden Mums are all the same!! Yes, that’s correct they are all Chrysanythemums.
2. All the mums grown buy greenhouse growers should come back every year. They are meant to come back in zones 5-9. Some varieties tend to come back easier than all varieties. It depends on the weather, where they are planted and color type.
3. Why doesn’t everyone call them “Hardy Mums?" Our #1 question we get all the time. The hardiness comes from you the consumer. Mums will come back if they are prepared for the winter months ahead. A quick and simple tip, plant your mum in the ground sooner than later. A better root system your mum establishes before the frost the better the chances it will survive the winter months.
The reason most garden centers stopped calling them “Hardy Mums” was because of some consumers that didn’t want to follow the proper steps and their mum didn’t come back. Instead of negative feedback/interactions, Fall/Garden mum name is a better way to classify the mum.
4. If you are using them in some type of display, plant them as soon as you take the display down. There is NO "set" number of weeks to get them in the ground before the first frost. Makes no difference. Light Fall frost has very little effect on Mum plants as they are a cool weather plant. Some people have planted as late as Thanksgiving and have had excellent success.
5. Be sure to plant your mum in a protected area. The cold winter months will put your mum to the test! If you can plant where the wind won’t be directjy hitting the mum all winter that is a bonus. Another factor is snow! Believe it or not, but snow will insulate the mum and help protect them from the wind and negative temperatures in a typical Michigan winter.
6. After they have died in the season, they can be "cut back" leaving 4-6” of the plant stem. This step is not necessary if you don't have the time to do it.
7. Covering your mum, this is a good idea, especially if we don't have much snow over the winter months to keep the roots "insulated". DO NOT use leaves for mulch as they will "mat" down and smother the roots of the plant. This also holds true for ANY perennial plant. You can use mulch or straw to cover.
8. WATER YOUR MUMS!!! Water them during the Fall months (September/October/November). The worst thing you can do is dry them out. The morning dew in these months will not be enough water for them. We put a granular fertilizer pellet on each of our mums so no need to fertilize. Also, during the winter months when they are dormant they do not need water.
9. First thing in the spring, when the trees start to bud, pull the mulch back from the plants a bit, as the new growth starts very early.
10. If the Michigan winter didn’t kill your mum you should start seeing some new growth come April! Spring is the time to start fertilizing your plants. Mums love fertilizer. We use a 20-10-20 but any type of fertilizer will work. Remember they have been dormant for 4-5 months. They are hungry……feed them!
11. Once the new growth is up it may have some odd shape to them. We suggest give them a “haircut”. Cut them down again 3-4” and you will have new fresh growth.
We sure hope these suggestions help. Over the years we have had very good success following these suggestions, but sometimes some just do not make it, and this is true with some perennial plants also. We have found that the lack of snow (insulation) that allows the plants to be exposed to the harsh winter winds if very hard on some varieties.
FYI this is not a full proof system and we can’t guarantee every Michigan region or Michigan winter will be the same. For that reason will we still be calling our mums “Fall Mums”. Hope you enjoyed this little information tid-bit. If you have any other suggestions for us to elaborate on pleas let us know in the comments!!
Take care and Happy Fall Y’all!!

“Sticking cuttings”….the name of the planting process we have been working on the past few weeks! We have been planting a variety of plants using this procedure.
First, we gather the ”unrooted cuttings” from the host, or mother plants across Middle America, where they grow abundantly. Next, we stick the unrooted plants into our soil filled trays. It takes 3-5 weeks (depending on varieties) for them to be fully rooted. Finally, we can transfer the plant into the hanging basket or patio pot!
***Plants used in this operation: geraniums, potato vine, new guniea impatiens, sunpatiens, million bells, petunias ****
