Seattle Children’s is spotlighting workforce members from our hospital who bring hope, care, and cures to children and their families. Meet Joelyn, an MA at SCH South Clinic Urgent Care.
Joelyn finds that the most rewarding aspect of working at Seattle Children's is helping families and seeing patients' faces smiling after getting the best care. Her advice for those seeking a healthcare job is to be flexible, communicate clearly and consistently with patients, staff, and administrators. Listen carefully to patients, express empathy, and identify the cause of the problem and maintain professionalism.
Seattle Children’s Heart Center team has expanded to provide greater access to the highest-quality pediatric and fetal cardiology care close to our patients’ homes. We partner with patient families across the Pacific Northwest to create personalized care plans focused on delivering the best possible outcomes so that our patients can live a full and active life. Hudson came to Seattle Children's, where pediatric heart experts recommended a heart transplant. With compassionate care and comprehensive cardiac treatment, he got his new heart. Today, Hudson is the honorary captain of his hometown football team - and Seattle Children's is right there cheering him on. "Being at OBCC gave us a sense of comfort. They had doctors, hematologists, an advanced practice provider, a nurse and a scheduling coordinator all trying to help improve our quality of life,” shared John.
Last year, John volunteered at the Seattle Sickle Cell Task Force’s annual Sickle Cell Walk where he met Shaquita Bell, MD who told him that the Sickle Cell Disease Program at OBCC could use somebody like him.

"I immigrated to the U.S. from China in 2000. After working in hospitality for a few years, I started at Seattle Children’s in 2008. I have been working here for over sixteen years. The most rewarding part of working at Seattle Children’s Hospital is providing essential services that make patients and their families feel comfortable, particularly in critical areas like the operating room. I take pride in being a versatile team member, helping the hospital run smoothly. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, walking my daughter’s dog Millie, and hiking with family in Washington. My advice for anyone considering a career in healthcare is to be a good team player, adaptable, and ready to handle the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of the field."
