Blackberries have been known in the past by many names, including ‘brambleberries’, ‘brumblekites’ and ‘lawers’. There is evidence that blackberries were eaten in Britain in Neolithic times and were surrounded by superstitions.
British blackberry season begins in June, and reaches its peak in August and continues until the first frosts in November. But they should not be picked after Michaelmas, (September 29). For legend states this is when St Michael, for whom the day is named, battled Lucifer and kicked him out of heaven, Lucifer landed in hell, on a thorny blackberry bush. This made him so mad that he spat on the bush and cursed its fruit. Blackberries aren't at their best in September, so if you want the best ones, get your bucket out now and start picking, and make sure to freeze some so you can make a blackberry pie for St Michaelmas Day. 😀🥧😋

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee cake was successfully delivered to Buckingham Palace at 10am this morning.
I could never have imagined that I would contribute to such an unprecedented event in British royal history - the commemoration of Her Majesty’s remarkable seventy-year reign.
I cannot find the words to describe how humbled I am by this honour. Anyone who knows me, will know I am a keen royalist and a patriot.
For obvious reasons, the Palace requested that we keep this news a secret until the cake had been safely delivered to the Palace.
This achievement is a testament to our company and the immeasurable contribution of our dedicated team over the last 10 years.
I am grateful to my team for allowing me the time to devote to designing, making and decorating this cake for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
I could not have achieved this milestone without the unwavering support of my loving wife, Emma.
What an incredible day!
Kind regards
Mark
