Highland Hemp House
Sustainable, Non-toxic, Breathable, Carbon-negative Building Construction.
Highland H**p House is a challenge we have taken up to retrofit a 45-year-old home with h**p and lime, 100% natural materials that make for an ideal, healthy living environment – in a uniquely innovative city. Bellingham, with its beautiful setting between the Chuckanut Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, has long been a leading proponent of sustainable living, with a long history of backing the "green" movement.

I haven’t posted for a while. Here’s a little paragraph I wrote to promote a workshop and a photo from inside my h**pctete (and glass:) greenhouse:
Shortage of affordable housing, environmental degradation, and social inequities are intersectional problems that affect everyone today. Is there hope for the future? The North West Living & Learning Community Collaborative is offering a tangible tool to accelerate hopeful alternatives to these cross paralyzed conventions. The simple building materials of h**p and lime, often called “h**pcrete”, offer an array of physical properties that could be a wellspring for the social and economic transformation. It may sound like a bold claim that a building material can nourish so many aspects of human life, but think of how central to living are the places we occupy as home. If, instead of toxic, energy wasteful, industry-produced materials, our homes are made of a simple plant and mineral blend that is resistant to fire, mold, heat loss, that is carbon capturing, and most of all—is accessible and regenerative, worldwide. Think of how empowered communities could be by knowing how to build with these materials.
How much carbon is sequestered in an acre of h**p?

HHH WENT TO DC TO LOBBY FOR REMOVING PROHIBITIONS FROM INDUSTRIAL H**P THROUGH THE 2023 FARM BILL. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN MAKING THAT HAPPEN? LETS DISCUSS.
Natural Building options
There are many recipes for bricks...but the primary ingredient is always clay soil. Clay is a sticky binder/glue. Usually in adobe, you are using clay to bind sand and/or straw together. Many recipes also call for cow or horse manure. And many 'ferment' the mixture before making bricks.
Fermenting simply means leaving the wet mixture to sit for a period of days or weeks. This releases cellulose from any straw, adding to the stickiness...and it makes the mixture more pliable to work with and more resistant to cracking.
Forming the bricks involves filling a mold with your wet mixture, and then almost immediately lifting the form off. The bricks are laid in the sun to dry until they are firm enough to stand up. Then the bricks are rolled into a vertical position to dry further. Baking in the sun increases the strength of the bricks.
Cob is the same mixture as adobe, but it is formed in place instead of making bricks. The benefit of cob, is that it's easier to make curvy walls and sculpt niches right into your wall. The benefit of adobe is that you do the work & allow the material to dry fully ahead of time. Then the wall-building goes extremely quickly and doesn't require a long drying process in situ.
Any clay wall provides thermal mass...that is, they act as a battery for heat energy. Getting warmer when there is a direct heat source (sun, fire, hot air) and releasing heat whenever the surrounding environment is cool/cold.
I believe this is true.
"If humans are not required to earn a living to be provided survival needs, many are going to want very much to be productive, but not at those tasks they did not choose to do but were forced to accept in order to earn money. Instead, humans will spontaneously take upon themselves those tasks that world society really needs to have done."

Lots of people have been visiting this page, probably because of Steve's book. I'd love to get some inquiries from architects, designers, builders, scientists, policy makers, investors, . . . who are in positions to influence the upscaling of these materials. Thanks, Steve, for showing the world that buildings that help to repair the climate are not only possible, they exist on many scales!
New book published and out now!! H**p Buildings: 50 International Case Studies. ⭐️ A comprehensive overview of 50 projects this latest book from author and h**p expert, Steve Allin, draws on architectural examples of every kind to showcase the vast range of possibilities available when using h**p-based materials for construction. Since the 1980’s, this unique material together with the systems that have developed from it has provided vital pointers to how buildings can become more energy efficient. Through lowering carbon emissions and promoting a healthier environment, h**p has a clear role to play in providing innovative solutions that lead us forward into a cleaner and more sustainable future.
