American Farmland Trust - Pacific Northwest
We focus on farmland protection, local food, and conservation on farms in and around the Pacific Northwest.
American Farmland Trust is the only national conservation organization dedicated to protecting farmland, promoting sound farming practices, and keeping farmers on the land. As the vital link among farmers, conservationists and policy-makers, we’re focused on ensuring the availability of the land that provides fresh food, a healthy environment and lasting rural landscapes.

Many farmers are seeing urban sprawl threaten farms and local food systems. Development pressure is increasing the cost of land, creating barriers for the next generation of farmers. Our Farms Under Threat research shows Washington lost nearly 98,000 acres of farmland. By 2040, we stand to lose another 192,000 more acres of our best farmland if we continue this "business as usual" approach.
This training teaches and enthusiasts how to influence change and advocate for farmland protection in their communities. Participants learn how to engage in county planning -- as well as how to share stories that inspire change, elevate the urgency of farmland protection, and offer tangible solutions to local policymakers.
Counties across western Washington are updating their comprehensive plans, and the rest will follow in the coming years. Local elected officials balance many priorities to manage population growth, including farmland protection. They need to hear from you! Join us.
