Our Story
Children of the Setting Sun Productions enlivens the rich history, legacies, stories and historical traditions of the Salish people using traditional and contemporary art mediums. We endeavor to create understanding and change perceptions across cultural differences, share history and educate others. Setting Sun embraces the instructions left by the great grandfather to keep the family culture alive and welcomes all to gather and share in the experience.
CSSP exists to both retain and deepen our Coast and Straights Salish cultural presence, and to further the realization of indigenous human rights locally and globally. Our work strengthens the health of communities by exploring and promoting cultural resiliency and increasing cross-cultural understanding and historical literacy. Our work impacts our youth, our Elders, and the broad Coast Salish communities by capturing the important stories and life ways that direct our people's culture and self-identity. Our work helps retain the memory and amplifies the voice of our Salish communities, building awareness of the need itself to permanently retain parts of our culture at risk of being lost, and contributes to the contemporary archive needed to do so. In addition to teaching and learning about our culture, taking pride in where we came from and the struggles our ancestors endured, we also work at shifting and influencing the dominant narrative of our contemporary times based on the wisdom and worldviews of our ancestors, elders, and youth. Doing this gives our community the strength and awareness to engage in present and future challenges to both our sovereignty and our environment.
We follow the Lummi Family tradition of Native Storytelling.
