One of the most common and arguably more recognizable tiles in North America, Ludowici French Tile! We have been working diligently to bring in as much as possible. The early results? We have hundreds of squares of red, dull green, Brookville Green, matte white, and even some Mediterranean Blue. Let me know if you have any immediate French tile needs! I’ve got you covered !

Spring is in the air and that means - SALVAGES (in between the rain)!

This roof is being removed and shipped to our tile yard in Northern, IL next week. Due to various issues, the home owner opted to replace this roof with an asphalt shingle provided by Kanga Roof/EcoHome Expert Inc.

Thankfully, Renaissance Tile and Slate was given the opportunity to preserve this roof and offer to our clients for their respective projects. We will save nearly 30,000lbs of debris from going to the landfill all the while continuing this tiles great lifespan! Win-win for all involved!

This is an old Ludowici Light Weight Interlocking Old Type (LWIOT) trimmed with a standard #118 and #211 trim group. What's not very common and a bit rare is the vented #211 Ridges!

It’s critically important to abide by manufacturer recommendations for tile and slate roofing systems. In the same, it is equally important to discuss the proper pieces and parts necessary for snow retention with each respective client (in the case of client refusal and assurance you’re not carrying the bag when repairs are required after the fact).

Not sure that additional snow retention used in conjunction with this snow rail could prevented this damage, but it’s worth taking a hard look at the questions raised.

Thankfully, this snow rail, although the base broke, did its job and prevented avalanching snow from reaching people and/or property below. A worthy asset for your roofing system!

It's not always pretty before we receive it, but here's another group of tile that just isn't very common anymore; Ludowici Light Weight Interlocking Old Type Tile (LWIOT). Green with a rough weathered surface texture. We NEVER charge extra for the lichen or natural growths on the surface. =)

These LWIOT tiles were produced by Ludowici prior to their current, more standardized version known as Lanai. The differences are subtle but will throw you into fits if you're trying to intermingle the two profiles.

LWIOT: 13-1/4" x 8-3/4" x 7/8" thick ROUNDED butt end

Lanai: 14" x 9" x 7/8" thick SQUARE butt end

We have recovered a handful of these original Ludowici dull green French tile roofs over the past couple of months (with another coming next week).

The French profile is one of the most widely used tiles in North America, along with Spanish "S" tile and it is one of Ludowici's most durable profiles. French is a larger format interlocking tile, being 16-1/4" in length and weighing a beefy 7.7lbs. per tile.

We commonly carry several colors and glazes such as natural red, dull green (as shown), Brookville Green, and some specialty colors (matte white and Mediterranean Blue). Along with field tile, we have most common matching trim tiles available as well ( #102 hip, #206 ridge, rakes, end bands, etc).

Taking a closer look at the Ludowici Closed Shingle tile we just brought to our tile yard here in Northern, IL. First, it’s no secret that Ludowici is hands down my absolute favorite clay roofing tile. In close to a quarter century, I’ve simply never seen any other product that comes close to the quality, the uniqueness, and the aesthetic appeal (brand new or 120yrs. old). The Closed Shingle tile, commonly referred to as the “Book Tile” due to it’s square, 8” x 8” exposure on the roof is one of Ludowici’s most durable tiles. Over the past several years, Ludowici continued production of these tiles (as opposed to custom production) and now calls them “Morando Closed Shingle”.

As shown in my images, this dull green (old Forest Green) Closed Shingle tile is in superb condition. There is zero sign of any deterioration, spalling, or any indication that this tile will fail any time of the next….50, 75, 100yrs?? Still rock solid! When I have the opportunity to buy or reclaim Closed Shingle tiles, I generally ALWAYS bring them in. These tiles are a staple of the historic roofing industry and will be for decades to come.

I have also added several pages from Ludowici’s historic roofing tile book! Such a treasure trove of great information.

As we slog through winter, we’re gearing up for a very busy spring and summer. We are actively procuring materials from roofing contractors and homeowners throughout the country. We’ve packed our warehouse with semi-loads of material and have numerous loads “on deck” awaiting shipment to our facilities and no end in sight.

We have a refined process for reclamation which we’ve found is fair and amicable; deliver the material to our facility, repack all items completely (while discarding the unusable products), document the products, inventory, and send the final purchase documents to the seller for final pay out. In over 30yrs of salvaging and reclaiming roofing systems, we’ve found this method is best.
