❗❗ PUBLIC STATEMENT ❗❗

Please read and widely share our public statement condemning development on People's Park as well as Chancellor Christ's shameless use of misinformation to justify destroying a public space currently home to many residents of Berkeley.

read the full statement here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_9FyR_LvmwaRSpTlPV9whFoUSyH_Q8R9/view?usp=sharing

We, as students of the University of California, Berkeley, condemn the building of housing on People’s Park. There has been an overwhelming influx of inaccurate information as well as a severe lack of transparency on behalf of the University regarding the negative social consequences that would result from development on People’s Park. The loss of this physical space would not only destroy a green space but also erase decades of rich cultural, communal, and social history. For more than 50 years, People’s Park has promoted community gathering, relationship-building, and environmental preservation through events such as weekly gardening parties, concerts, People’s Park Committee meetings, and celebratory events like The Suitcase Clinic’s 30th Anniversary Solidarity Party. The uprooting of this communal space would devastate the many residents who call the park home.

Prompted by the email Chancellor Carol Christ sent to the UC Berkeley community on February 22, 2021, The Suitcase Clinic re-emphasizes its disappointment with the continued spread of misinformation and lack of transparency from all members involved in the People’s Park construction, despite the growing response from the Berkeley community in support of preserving the Park. We would like to take this opportunity to provide feedback on each of the points made by Chancellor Christ.

Presenting another beautiful set of graphics by Christine Youn and Zahra Anwar! This slideshow is an incredible summary of the diverse stories that People's Park has been host to, and the culture and history that it carries to this day.

Photos from The Suitcase Clinic's post 02/18/2021

This is a reminder that the Suitcase Clinic, People's Park Committee, and our allies at the Berkeley Outreach Coalition will not stop trying to combat the onslaught of dangerous misinformation around People's Park.

Members of the Suitcase Clinic would like to encourage anyone who wishes to advocate for either side of the issue of People's Park development to do their research before taking a stance. For instance, attend more than one People's Park Committee meeting, contribute your time and energy to outreach efforts, and get to know some of the residents before attempting to speak on their behalf. Most importantly, understand your positionality with regards to this issue.

You will do well to remember that any misinformation on the topic of homelessness has the potential to be dangerous. Do not arm people with misleading information or rumors to make them feel justified in committing acts of discrimination or violence against the most vulnerable members of our community.

On that note, please check out this beautiful graphic by Christine Youn and Zahra Anwar. It's an incredible summary of the diverse stories that People's Park has been host to, and the culture and history that it carries to this day.

- how the struggle over a three-acre plot of land helped Reagan win the 1980 presidency
- how the university perpetuates negative stereotypes about the park
- actions you can take RIGHT NOW to fight back against the development of student housing on People's Park

Thank you everyone who attended the People's Park History Talk last night. This is our official statement regarding the "Zoom Bombing" that occurred, as well as a list of support and resources that we hope you find useful. We take full responsibility for the incident and apologize again for the highly traumatic and triggering images that entered our space. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns

In light of current happenings around People's Park, it's especially important to consider the park's history and cultural significance.
