FAR OUT EAST: The Teachings of Taro

When we started planning our trip to Hokkaido, we felt it was essential to acknowledge and pay our respects to one of the great legends of the island, Taro Tamai.

Taro’s highly regarded as a master craftsman, but that’s only a small part of his story. The founder of Gentemstick’s unique approach to life is an inspiration to many throughout the world. He’s a modern day poet - a rambling soul whose life transitions between sea level and 1000+m elevation with ease. Taro’s life’s philosophy, of being at one with, and taking inspiration from, nature, has solidified his place as a significant elder in the realms of surf and snow.

His take on the creative process has long inspired us - and it was a rare honour that we were able to sit down and get to know him on our journey Far Out East. This project is the culmination of that experience - Far Out East, The teachings of Taro.

Meet Ivah Wilmot, Roark Revivalist

A conversation with Ivah is well paced. Naturally he’s quiet and
measured, but his words hold weight both lyrically and substantively. His surfing follows suit. It’s more of a dance - part skank, part ballet. Each word in a sentence, or alternatively, turn on a wave has purpose and is well placed, although sometimes unorthodox. Life imitates art. It’s easy to feel the connection between what Ivah loves and equally refreshing that it’s no fluke. He hasn’t created a style to fit a niche, it was bestowed upon him by a culture and family. That’s not to say Ivah hasn’t tweaked it. You’ll also find that Ivah has a modern sensibility that builds upon the past without rejecting it.
