One of the things we love most about sewing is the ability to create clothing that fits our bodies exactly how we'd like—what a superpower! Once you've tackled sewing a few basic wardrobe pieces, sewing a fitted garment is a great way to level up your sewing skills. For your first tailored garment, working with a stable woven fabric like denim or corduroy will ensure a beautiful result.
Lightweight fabrics include those under 5 ounces per square yard. In terms of denim and corduroy, some lightweight options would be a cotton chambray, a cotton twill, or a pinwale corduroy. These fabrics work especially well for tailored tops like the , as well as for patterns like the and the that require very light structure.

The 1980s were a pastel wonderland, a mist of soft colors hanging in the air. Pastels were absolutely everywhere, even in horror movies! Because of this, we had to share the pastel pajamas worn by the characters in "A Nightmare on Elm Street." Some heroes wear capes, but these teens battled Freddy Krueger wearing nightgowns as their armor! We'll create Nancy's look with the in cotton Swiss dot or eyelet, and we'll emulate Tina's nightgown with the dress in the prettiest pink florals and stripes.
In the spirit of Halloween, we've got a special treat for you today: 20% off! It's the perfect time to pick up the special deadstock fabric you've had your eye on, a couple of finishing touches for your Halloween costume, or stock up on the fabric, patterns, and notions you'll need for your next big sewing project. For a refined loungewear look, we're tuning in to the classic thriller "Rear Window" for some of vintage inspiration. Confined to his apartment with a broken leg, photographer Jeff Jefferies wears pajamas for comfort and convenience. We'll create Jeff's classic look with a set of or in crisp, blue, shirting-weight cotton. Jeff's girlfriend Lisa Fremont is a fashion model, and her look is predictably elegant—we'll reinterpret her nightgown with the Evening Gown in slinky silk crepe de chine, and her peignoir as a floor-length in airy silk organza.
Where do you find your inspiration? While we are usually inspired by all the new fabrics in the shop, today we're taking a slightly different angle. With a nod to the Halloween season, this week's posts are inspired by the everyday clothes worn by the average folks who happen to find themselves in extremely unusual situations in some of our favorite scary movies.
Our favorite regular folks in a completely unhinged movie are definitely Adam and Barbara Maitland. While the couple meets a shockingly quick demise in Beetlejuice, they're part of the rest of the movie in spirit! We love Barbara and Adam's New England preppy vibe—it's a vintage 80s look that we'd love wearing today. We'll create Barbara's look with a drop-waist dress like the in a Laura Ashley-inspired floral, and use a brushed cotton twill for her cute apron. Adam's outfit is best replicated with the in wool blend flannel and a pair of in the perfect tan twill.

With our first outfit double-feature of the series, here are two looks as worn by Carrie White in Carrie. For daytime, high school student Carrie wears an ensemble of subdued neutrals—we'll create the look with the in cotton shirting, the in wool suiting (love a sweet rick rack accent!), and top it off with the in a soft sweater knit. For prom night, Carrie's got a totally dreamy dress planned—our version features the slinky in the most perfect barely-pink silk crepe de chine. Hang on, what's the red viscose satin in the photo for? Shhh, no spoilers!

When Wendy Torrance and her family head up north in "The Shining", she's planned some genius layers to wear during their winter stay at the Overlook Hotel. In one of our favorite looks, Wendy's plaid summer dress goes multi-seasonal with the addition of a pair of bright red long johns—just the thing for a cozy winter trip! We'll emulate Wendy's look with the in brushed plaid shirting layered over the and a pair of in the comfiest cotton jersey knit.

Halloween is just one week away, which means it's time for the phone calls and emails posing the most-asked question we receive this time of year: "Do you have felt?" Friends, we are pleased to report that we have sixteen colors of acrylic felt in stock, and plenty of yardage of each!
Acrylic felt is our all-time favorite for making costumes, decorations, and crafts! Felt doesn't fray, so you can cut it with craft scissors and sew or glue it together (hot glue is best!) to make quick, inexpensive costumes and accessories. Our felt is 72 inches wide and sold in increments of 1/8 yard, so you can purchase as little or as much as you need for your project! All of our felt may be purchased in the Berkeley store as well as on our website.
