As an architect who focuses on sustainable design, I know that transitioning to renewable energy is a key to keeping our ecosystems, and ourselves, healthy. Offshore wind is a key component of that transition, as each turbine can power thousands of homes and replace the fossil fuel emissions currently disrupting our climate and causing warming and acidification of our oceans. The offshore wind project proposed by US Wind is just one of many projects that give me hope for our future. However, there is an oddly prevalent piece of misinformation that has prevented the public from fully supporting offshore wind -- the idea that the offshore wind industry is killing whales. Scientific American is a respected secondary-source publication, meaning it takes primary-source, peer-reviewed science and translates it into layman's terms.
