Today we mark the 75th anniversary of women serving in the Regular Navy. On June 12, 1948, President Harry S Truman signed the Armed Services Integration Act into law. This landmark legislation granted all service women the chance to serve in the regular military. In the Navy, prior to this date, only members of the Nurse Corps held active-duty status—all others held reserve status as WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Among the first Navy medical women selected for transfer into the Regular Navy in 1948 were:
Hospital Corps:
HM1 Ruth Flora (First non-Navy nurse to serve in regular Navy)
Medical Corps:
Lt. Cmdr. Frances Willoughby
Lt. Gioconda Saraniero
Medical Service Corps:
Lt. Cmdr. Margaret Diehm
Lt. Cmdr. Mildred Lewis
Lt. Cmdr. Mary Sproul
Lt. Mary Keener
Lt. Margaret Stirewalt
Lt. Paula Towle
Lt. (j.g.) Maria Aquino
Lt. (j.g.) Elizabeth Reeves
Ens. Virginia Eager
