From a 1933 article “Clark Gable’s New Year Resolutions:”
Clark Gable:
“I resolve never to be blind to the fine and precious things that are mine right now.
“I resolve to keep my eyes open, and my heart, to the things that are with me here and now, today.
“I resolve to pass this particular resolution on to all who will listen to me: Look in your own front yard for beauty and for happiness.
“I resolve to let Tomorrow take care of itself. It always has.”
“I resolve never to whimper, whine or kick when I begin to take the long toboggan into oblivion. It has, perhaps, begun for me. I know that I am not what I was, or perhaps I should say where I was a year ago. That’s all right. I don’t expect to be. There are those who say that I should never have played the minister role in ‘Polly of the Circus,’ or the white-haired conversational man in ‘Strange Interlude’—but who knows? It’s all experience. Some of it good, some of it not so good, perhaps. Here and now I am concerned only with my resolution—which is to continue to be grateful for what I have had and still have and never to show the white feather about what is to be.”

Merry Christmas- The Gables
From a 1956 article “The Brave Lovers,” about Clark Gable and fifth wife Kathleen “Kay” Spreckels:
Gable’s always tried to be cooperative with the press, he’s a man who places great value on his privacy. And Kay, who has had her share of headlines in the past, wisely values whatever her guy does.
There are a few little things which are generally known. For instance, Clark and Kay call each other “Ma” and “Pa” just as he and Carole Lombard did.
People perpetually point out that Kay seems to have so many of Carole’s qualities. Though the fifth Mrs. Gable has carefully restrained from commenting on these remarks, she’s no doubt getting a little weary of them.
When Kay and Clark eloped, the columnists couldn’t get to their typewriters fast enough to start comparing her with her predecessor.
“I noticed all the wedding stories pointed out I’d be good for Clark because I was such an ‘outdoor girl,’” Kay remarked to a close friend when they returned from their brief honeymoon. “That being the case, maybe I should tell my husband to pitch a tent and move the bedrolls outside,” she quipped.
She was also amused at the columnists who wrote about her “winning” Clark’s affections. “The way they phrase it, you’d think I won him in a crap game,” Kay cracked…
Kay’s an extremely witty woman, quick with the quip... But when she’s serious about something, you can count on her leveling with you. And more important, she always levels with herself.
“I think I can explain just why we’ve been so happy,” she says. “But I hope I don’t sound too trite or corny.
“Our marriage is going to last because, aside from being deeply in love with each other, we have such a nice companionship. It takes both, you know.
“We truly enjoy being together. Clark and I have an easy, harmonious relationship. There’s no nagging or fighting in this house. We’re always natural and comfortable. There’s no strain.
“Most important of all, there’s no living in the past. No throwing things up to each other. Whatever either of us did before doesn’t count no. We look ahead to all the happy things awaiting us.”
Lovely Article
“[Clark Gable is] the kind of man it relaxes you to be around. He’s himself, so he expects you to be yourself. If you aren’t, you can go fly a kite. He’s so natural, most people can’t tell the difference between the on-screen Gable and the off-screen Gable. They think he’s playing himself. He is, up to a certain point. There’s a difference between being natural off the screen and being natural on it. It takes a little art to be natural with a camera in front of you and a microphone over you. Gable has made a fine art of it. If you don’t think he’s a past master of acting, let me point out that nobody ever takes a scene away from Clark Gable.
“But he has a phobia about letting anybody tell him he’s good. He distrusts flattery. He’s not going to let anybody trap him into being self-satisfied. He’s the greatest self-blower-downer in captivity. He’ll give a terrific performance and then turn to the director and say, “Was that hammy enough?’” ~Spencer Tracy

The Filming of Idiots Delight When he started filming IDIOT’S DELIGHT in the fall of 1938, Clark Gable had just signed on the dotted line to play Rhett Butler in GONE WITH THE WIND but had time to kill before filming started. C…
Clark Gable in March 1940:
“I tried to duck that Rhett assignment, you know. I didn’t want any part of it. I had my neck out far enough; acting characters that only script writers had ideas about in advance, without sticking it out where everybody could take a swipe at it. Everybody this side of Tibet had read the book, and everybody had different ideas about Rhett, and it was a cinch I couldn’t please everybody.
“They tried to tell me I was ‘everybody’s choice for the role.’ They showed me carloads of letters to ‘prove’ it. The only way that made me feel good was that, in case I did play the role and there were any complaints”—he grinned again—“I could always say, ‘Folks, you asked for it!’”
“Then they tried to make out that Margaret Mitchell had had me in mind when she created the character. That didn’t go down with me. The book came out in 1936. She had been writing it for three solid years before that, and planning it for years before that. According to my figuring, she thought of Rhett Butler long before anybody, anywhere, thought of me twice.
“I had an answer for all their arguments except one. That one floored me. It was: if I played Rhett, Selznick would release the picture through MGM, which would mean a lot to the home team.” He sounded like a fellow who went out for football for good old alma mater, not because he wanted to play football.
Clark laughed. “Yeah, I don’t think I wanted to play. But once I got into the spirit of the thing, I played my fool head off. And had a good time doing it—with Victor Fleming coaching and with running mates like Leigh and Howard and de Havilland. The only thing that bothers me is: I still don’t know what kind of showing I made.
“I like the picture; I think it’s a good one; but that doesn’t mean a thing. I got paid for making it. Besides, any ham likes any picture that gives him a meaty role. And what critics say doesn’t mean much, either. They see shows on passes. The opinion I’m waiting for is the opinion of the fellow who plunks down thirty-five cents of his own hard-earned dough to see it.”

And this is where it all started - Gone With The Wind.
“When you talk about Gable, you aren’t talking about a man, or even an actor. You’re talking about a symbol. Gable is an institution.” - Mervyn LeRoy (director)
Remembering Director and Friend Mervyn LeRoy on his 123rd birthday.
While touring the country in the stage production of "The Last Mile", a prison melodrama, Gable impressed Director Mervyn LeRoy, LeRoy remarked “He was powerful, brutal, animal-like,” Head of Production over at Warner Bros. Darryl F. Zanuck did not share LeRoy's enthusiasm regarding Gable, Gable was LeRoy's first choice for the role of Joe Massara in Little Caesar that eventually fell to Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
LeRoy did eventually director 2 pictures with starring Gable Homecoming (MGM, 1948) and Any Number Can Play (MGM, 1949)
