The Xerox story and the quote “Good artists copy, great artists steal” are closely related, so I’ll explain them together.

In the late 1970s, Xerox had developed an advanced technology for personal computers at its Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). This included graphical user interfaces (GUI), which used windows, icons, and a mouse, instead of just text commands.

In 1979, Steve Jobs and a few Apple engineers visited Xerox PARC. They were given a tour and shown the Alto computer, which featured a GUI. Jobs was amazed by what he saw and realized the potential of the GUI. He believed that this was the future of computing.

Jobs then made GUI a central feature of the Apple Lisa and later the Macintosh. However, he didn’t just copy what he saw at Xerox. He and his team at Apple improved upon the ideas and integrated them into a more consumer-friendly product. They worked on making it more intuitive, aesthetically pleasing, and accessible.

This leads us to the quote, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” This quote has been attributed to various people, including Pablo Picasso, and Steve Jobs famously used it. What Jobs meant by this is that good artists might copy ideas, but great artists take an idea and make it their own by transforming it into something better or different. They don’t just replicate, but they take the essence and build upon it.

In Jobs’ mind, Xerox had groundbreaking technology but didn’t realize its full potential. Apple, on the other hand, “stole” the essence of the idea, and transformed it into a product that changed the way people interact with computers. Essentially, it’s about internalizing an idea and reinventing it, rather than just imitating it.
