🎥“Good scenes make good movies. When you think of a good movie, you remember scenes, not the entire film… The scene is the single most important element in your screenplay. Scenes are where something happens — where something *specific* happens.” — Syd Field in "Screenplay" (pages 162 & 163)📕

“When you read a well-written screenplay, ' a good read,’ the words literally leap off the page at you. Part of it is style, yes, and part of it is structure, yes, but the real dynamic of good screenwriting is creating strong and active characters combined with a unique, stylized visual narrative that consistently moves the story forward. Strong action and strong characters. That’s what makes good screenwriting.”

From Aviva Field: (Syd Field) Screenplays are essential to visual storytelling, and writers are more important than ever. They share their experiences and voices, build cultural bridges, and show us our shared humanity — something technology and AI cannot offer.
Ted Sarandos Says AI Cannot Replace Filmmakers: “There Is No Shortcut For The Human Experience” Deadline has an exclusive excerpt from Literally! with Rob Lowe, where Ted Sarandos talks about AI in Hollywood
Honoring legendary Teacher Syd Field
45th Anniversary of the publication of his revolutionary book Screenplay –
"The bible of Screenwriting" -The New York Times
Syd Field's book on the essential structure of emotionally satisfying screenplays has ignited lucrative careers in film and television for decades.
📕From Field's Introduction to the Revised Edition:
"In 1979, when I first wrote Screenplay, there were few books on the market about screenwriting. My bestselling how-to guide changed that by laying out the principles of dramatic structure and establishing the Foundations of Screenwriting.
Movies are a combination of art and science. The technological revolution has changed the way we see movies and therefore, has changed the way we write movies. But no matter what changes are made in motion picture production and distribution, the nature of the screenplay hasn't changed: A screenplay is a story told with pictures, in dialogue and description, and placed within the context of dramatic structure. Screenplays are essential to the Art of Visual Storytelling.
That said, determine success solely by your dedication to your craft.
When you complete any screenplay, you've accomplished a tremendous achievement! You've taken an idea, expanded it into a dramatic or comedic storyline, and then sat down and spent months – or years – finishing a viable draft. That alone should be satisfying.
Not selling your screenplay shouldn't alter your internal state of mind or your feelings about yourself. Cherish your experience of writing. In the long run, you did what you set out to do. You fulfilled your hopes and dreams.
Writing brings its own rewards. Enjoy them and pass them on."

Types of Dialogue – “We have different Types of Dialogue: Exposition means necessary information that moves the story forward, either through Character, Dialogue, or Plot. And of course, Exposition is always there because we have to know who the characters are and what their purpose or dramatic need is in the screenplay.”

Types of Dialogue – “We have different types of Dialogue: Conflict and Confrontation. That’s one of the major parts of writing a screenplay. When we talk about conflict, we’re talking about being in opposition to someone or something: two different points of view. Two people collide, and the result is confrontation (you can’t do this in every scene). We look for internal conflict... We look for external conflict... Confrontation is regarded as a face-to-face meeting of people with opposing ideas.”

Types of Dialogue: “We have different Types of Dialogue. Voiceover Narration – I love it! First of all, voiceover narration can comment upon, or set up, the Action or the Character. You can use voiceover narration to explain things. There are certain story elements you may need to explain with more details for the reader or the audience. You can summarize the action, meaning what has happened up to this point. If the character has no one to talk to, you can use voiceover narration to let us hear what he or she is thinking at the time.”

Types of Dialogue: “The Theory of Illumination means that other characters, either minor or major, shed light on the Main Character. Just as you walk into a darkened room and turn on floor lamps in each of the four corners, each lamp illuminates a different aspect of the room. Each individual character illuminates certain aspects of the Main Character’s past that may impact the Storyline. It’s a way that we can give more information about the character without the Main Character having to say it.”

Syd Field – The Screenwriters’s Problem Solver
How To Recognize, Identify, and Define Screenwriting Problems
Troubleshooter’s Guide – Problem Sheet for Endings:
▪️ Story’s resolution is not paid off
▪️ The ending doesn’t work
▪️ The ending is too soft, too weak, confusing
▪️ The ending seems contrived, too predictable, unsatisfying
▪️ The main character dies (the easy solution)
▪️ The main character disappears at the end
▪️ A surprise twist comes out of nowhere
▪️ Everything happens too fast
▪️ Ending isn’t big or commercial enough
▪️ Ending is too big, and there might be a budget problem
The ending is the most likely thing your audience will remember…
Good luck!

“What’s the best, most effective way to set up your storyline and introduce your main character?
We know we have a great idea. We know we have it laid out and structured. We have our scene structure unfolding through the course of the storyline…
And then you get down to writing ‘FADE IN: INT./EXT. WHEREVER,’ and you want to either show your character *in an action* — that is, doing something actively — or you want to show your character *reacting* to some kind of situation through their behavior, so you can create the best introduction to who your character is.”

“Whatever has been said or written about the experience of writing or the creative process, it still boils down to one thing — writing is your own personal experience. Nobody else’s. There are a lot of people who contribute to the making of a movie [or TV series], but the writer is the only person who sits down and faces the blank sheet of paper.” – Screenplay – The Foundations of Screenwriting (page 239)

“Creating conflict within a story through characters and events is one of those simple, basic ‘truths’ of all writing, whether it be novel, play or screenplay.”
“Conflict can be expressed either physically or emotionally. You can talk about it through dialogue, or you can express it through physical acts, or you can have your character respond to it. Conflict, no matter what form it takes, becomes the engine that drives the storyline through the second act.”
– Syd Field “The Screenwriters Workbook” page 230

“… when all is said and done, the principles of screenwriting don’t change; they are the same no matter in what time or place or era we live. Great films are timeless — they embody and capture the time in which they were made; the human condition is the same now as it was then.”

“You’ll find that anything of value, anything of substance or quality, usually takes a long time before it’s sold or made. There is no such thing as an overnight success in Hollywood. A script that is written, sold, and made into a movie within a few years is the exception, not the rule.
Patience, persistence, and determination are what work in this town, the same way they do in life. Maybe that’s the lesson we all need to learn.”

“What made that writing experience [a rejection] so important to me was the realization that there are two sides to writing. One side can be discouraging, full of pain, doubt and despair.
The other side is the knowledge that with patience, discipline and the willingness to let material gestate, it will emerge when it’s ready.” – Syd Field, “Going to the Movies” page 49
