Diabetic Foot Care Guidelines - Beverly, MA Foot Doctor 12/29/2021

Please do not let your diabetic or neuropathic ulcerations go without professional treatment. πŸ©ΊπŸ’ŠπŸ©Ή It is important to get evaluated as patients with diabetes and other health conditions do not always present with classic signs of infection. A break in the skin can lead to a serious and possible life-threatening infection. 🦠🧫

This pandemic has sadly led to a delay in treatment of ulcerations which has resulted in life threatening infections and amputations. Please see your local Podiatrist πŸ₯Ό to get your foot and ankle 🦢evaluated right away if you notice breakdown of your skin, pain, redness, drainage or just do not feel right. Do not delay treatment. There are non-surgical and surgical options to save your feet and get you back to your activities. πŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸš΅πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸ§˜β›·

Reminder:
πŸ‘£ Do not walk barefoot
πŸ‘Ÿ Always check your shoes for foreign objects before putting them on
🦡 Check your feet at least once daily for breaks in the skin.
🏨 Please go to your local emergency room if you are experiencing fever, chills , shortness of breath , nausea, vomiting, malaise as these are just some signs of a major infection.

We had a unique case at Beverly Podiatry today, os intermetatarseum! πŸ‘£

This is a rare accessory bone in the foot between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals and cuneiform. Typically, they do not cause symptoms but with certain activities βš½οΈπŸŽΎβ›³οΈπŸ₯‹πŸ©°πŸŽ³ they can present as pain to the top of the foot or tingling in the 1st web space. 🦢

Resting, offloading, and possible steroid injection are conservative treatments we will exhaust but if symptoms persist we will surgically remove this extra bone. 🦴

With all this rain 🌧, let's talk about trench foot. Dating back to 1812, the diagnosis of trench foot became more understood during World War I. Today this diagnosis has evolved into the broader term, immersion foot syndromes. They are caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to warm or nonfreezing temperatures of water πŸ’§. The feet entrapped in wet socks 🧦 and shoes πŸ‘ŸπŸ₯Ύcan lead to symptoms such as numbness, itching, skin color changes, swelling, and pain. If you find yourself outside biking πŸš΅β€β™‚οΈ, hiking or even working in this rain for hours, it is important to change your socks and shoes when they become saturated whether from water or sweat and replace footwear if there are holes or leaks! Seek medical treatment immediately if experiencing these symptoms. β˜€οΈ

πŸπŸŒŠβ›±β˜€οΈπŸ“’ It’s beach and pool season! With this unfortunately comes the potential for β€œforeign bodies.” Foreign bodies encompass anything you step on that can pe*****te the skin and even go deep into bone. Common foreign bodies can range from glass, splinters, or nails. While some of these injuries can be uneventful, other cases can lead to painful retained foreign bodies in the foot, inclusion cysts, warts, possible infections in the soft tissue and bone, or even tetanus. Footwear can provide protection but if you find yourself with this injury, we are here to help! Same day emergency appointments are available. 978-922-0288
