Our A*O family would like to wish a Happy Ramadan 🕌🙏🏿💙💙💙 to all Muslims. Ramadan is the ninth month of the muslim calender, it also serves as the holy month of fasting. This year Ramadan started last night, April 12, 2021 and will last for 30 days. During Ramadan, muslims are obligated to fast from dawn to sunset meaning they abstain from food and drinks (even water) in those hours. The month of Ramadan heavily incorporates worship, prayer, charity and self reflection. Ramadan ends on May 12, 2021 which also marks the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. Phrases such as “Ramadan Kareem” and “Ramadan Mubarak” are common greetings during the month of Ramadan. You don’t have to participate in Ramadan to say those phrases.
Ramadan Mubarak to our Muslim brothers and sisters. -May12

Nanayaa Amponsah is a Ghanaian American writer. She is currently pursuing a double major in Africana Studies and Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies. She is from Bronx, NY and Ghanaian by heart. She started writing as a way to release frustration. She always write when she was younger to relieve stress and temporary pain. Writing puts her a different realm where she was forced to express emotions in her head into paper. It was a way for her to channel her emotions but also be her authentic self.

The citizens that reside within the country of Senegal 🇸🇳 are protesting in support of the wrongful arrest of leader Ousmane Sonko. Sonko was arrested for accusation of r**e. The citizens are protesting against an evident violation of democracy. These protests have caused a clash between protestors and police officers which left approximately 8 people dead. Additionally, the Senegalese government is censoring their citizens by preventing their access to social media platforms such as Youtube, Instagram, and retaining information from outside of the country. Therefore, they would have to use specific mechanisms to obtain internet.

The citizens of Senegal 🇸🇳 are exhausted because of the utter disrespect that they are receiving from the Senegalese administrations. Therefore, we should amplify the voices of the citizens of Senegal 🇸🇳 and raise awareness for those who are being silenced.

Happy Independence Day to the country of Ghana 🇬🇭. Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) gained its independence on March 6, 1957, therefore Ghana is 64 years old. It was the first African country to gain its independence from the British. In 1949, the riot between the British troops and African protestors served as a catalyst for the independence movement. This event causes leaders such Kwame Nkrumah and others to be imprisoned. Thus, in 1951 the constitution for the Gold Coast was revised and they were granted independence⚜️. There are more than 250 languages that are spoken in Ghana, but some of the main languages are English, Asante Twi, Ewe, Ga, and Fante. ✊🏿

Here is a thread of our wonderful alumni and senior advisors showcasing the beauty behind the kente cloth 🔥🇬🇭🎉.

Kikelomo Sanni is a Nigerian American writer. Born in Atlanta, Georgia on October 7th, 2001 she has been reading since her earliest memories and writing soon after. Her affinity for it all was due to entering different worlds through these books and meeting diverse characters. She believes it’s very important for people of color to have representation in books, because reading is where it starts. She just self-published her poetry book, The Gélé I Wear, which captures her perspective on self-love, growth and empowerment. The purpose is to find yourself within this and love that person despite what society tells you. It is available on Amazon.

Happy Independence Day Gambia‼️‼️‼️‼️🇬🇲

Gambia gained full independence from colonial Britain on 18 February 1965. Located on the west coast of Africa, The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa. The Gambia is one of only two countries whose self-standing short name for official use should begin with the word "The" (the other one being The Bahamas). In 1964, the prime minister of The Gambia said that one of the reasons they like to have "The" in their name is to avoid confusion with Zambia. The official language is English but they have several tribal languages such as Mandinka and Wolof. Some amazing places to visit are Abuko Nature Reserve, Bijilo Forest Park, Brufut Beach, Janjangbureh and many more!

Happy Black History Month🤩✨✊🏿 In this month, we celebrate black excellence and black pride👏🏿💪🏿. Also, we acknowledge the accomplishments and leaders that contributed to the opportunities for Black lives. The theme for this year is “Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity”. Originally, the second week of February in 1926 was chosen to celebrate Negro History Week because it was the same week of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas. However in the 1960s, on many college campuses, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month because of the growing awareness of the often neglected accomplishments. Therefore, President Gerald Ford official recognized the month of February as Black History Month.

Continuous racial injustice leaves damaging mental effects on students, especially black and brown students. While it remains important to continue the fight, moments of reprieve to heal from the ongoing trauma is necessary. Join the Phenomenal Pi Eta Chapter for a special exhibit titled “Community Care: Racial Healing”. We’ll feature some of Binghamton University student creatives and hold space for an important conversation surrounding mental health during traumatic times. Participants will be entered into a raffle for a self-care basket. The Zoom link is in our Instagram bio. We hope to see you there!
