November 4, 2020 - 11:00 am-12:30 pm (ET)
Bettina Byrd-Giles brings us her real-world application of interculturalism and DEI concepts and principles to an innovative project she initiated to transform the culture of Ensley, a local community in the Birmingham (Alabama) area. As CEO of the local health care center and co-founder of “Ensley Alive” Bettina partnered with artists and businesspeople to re-brand and rejuvenate the community using intercultural techniques and storytelling, especially highlighting the local jazz heritage. Additionally, as a fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation “Culture of Health Leaders” program, she launched “Branding Ensley” to further bring about paradigm shifts.

About the Presenter
Bettina Byrd-Giles is an Interculturalist, Health Equity Expert, and Community Change Agent. Her projects often combine her health care expertise and her work in developing cultural competence. One such program for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System improved the interviewing skills of data collectors through increasing their cultural competence. The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) was a core element of this program.
Bettina’s international interests began as a Third Culture Kid born in Japan to African-American parents. That influence eventually led her to a BA in international relations from the University of Virginia and carries on through her active participation in Birmingham’s Sister Cities program. Additionally Bettina founded Diversity University, a cross-cultural program involving six colleges and universities. She has a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, attended the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication and is a long-time SIETAR USA member.
