Encore Rehabilitation, Inc. is proud to be the Education and Triage Partner of Alabama's Coach Safely Foundation!

The Coach Safely Act (HB9), passed by Alabama Legislature, is the first of its kind to address public concerns about sports injuries for younger athletes (14 and younger). This law and the Coach Safely Program bring together community youth coaches and experts in the medical field to reduce sports injuries, increase education about injuries, and increase participation in sports activities. The law is administered under the Alabama Department of Public Health and will be piloted this fall. Advocates of the law include Coach Nick Saban of the University of Alabama, Coach Wille Slater of Tuskegee University, and numerous other coaches throughout the state.

One part of the Coach Safely program is an educational course for coaches. The course was developed by Dr. James R. Andrews and the Andrews Research & Education Foundation. The course covers topics such as concussions; heat and exertion illness; trauma and overuse; sudden cardiac arrest; and emergency action plans.

The Coach Safely Foundation was formed to support the Coach Safely Program and to work with each of the approximately 400 municipalities in the State of Alabama. The Foundation is supported by Children’s of Alabama, Encore Rehabilitation, and ThreatAdvice as well as public and private grants.

To read more about the Coach Safely Program, visit their website at: http://www.coachsafely.org

Summer time in the South means lots of heat and humidity! Here are 10 tips for dealing with the summer heat!

1. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. Do not wait until you are thirsty to start hydrating. A sports drink can help replace lost salt and minerals from sweating.

2. Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.

3. NEVER leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles. NEVER.

4. Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing that cover as much sun as possible. Protect your face and head with a wide-brimmed hat.

5. Avoid working outside during the hottest part of the day. Take frequent breaks.

6. Pay attention to what you eat and drink. Eat less of salty foods and eat more fruits and vegetables. Also smaller, more frequent meals will help.

7. Seek indoor, air-conditioned activities. If you do not have air conditioning, visit public places with air conditioning like the mall, the library, or restaurants.

8. Stay tuned to the local forecast on the radio, television, or internet.

9. Be sure to check on family and friends who do not have air conditioning and may live alone.

10. Learn the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, but it’s important to identify the warning signs and to react swiftly and appropriately when they arise.

We wish everyone a fun and safe summer!

Part 5 - Medical Professional guests from China concluded their tour of Encore Rehabilitation facilities by visiting sites in south Alabama. While in the area, they visited locations within the University of South Alabama Health System: USA Medical Center, USA Strada Patient Care Center, and USA Children's and Women's Outpatient Rehab Clinic, as well as Encore Rehabilitation-Tillman's Corner. Dr. Gregory H. Frazer, Dean of Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions at USA, joined Encore Rehabilitation Executives Paige Plash and Paul Henderson on the tour. The visitors also enjoyed spending some time at the beach. (See photo on our blog.)

The Chinese Medical Professionals were learning more about how Physical Therapy is utilized for rehabilitation and a return to health. China is expected to have over 400 million people over the age of 60 by the year 2020. Due to China's increasing population of older citizens, Western rehab practices like physical therapy are being incorporated with traditional Eastern rehab methods, such as acupressure and tai chi, to provide patient care. Throughout the week-long tour, the group was able to see Encore Rehabilitation therapists providing care in outpatient clinics, inpatient facilities, hospitals, school systems, industries, and fitness centers.

Encore Rehabilitation is the largest privately owned rehabilitation company in the Southeast United States, offering Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy as well as Industrial Rehab, Sports Medicine, and Athletic Training services. Encore has been serving families and communities for over 35 years.

The use of Western rehabilitation practices such as physical therapy and occupational therapy is growing in China. The visitors were observing and learning how Western rehab is used in a variety of settings such as outpatient clinics, hospitals, industries, and sports settings.
