OMG we know her!!!! You gonna be there too?!? Let’s support ALL our critical care partners from EMS and Alabama Emergency Nurses Association-ALENA!

Are you coming to the ALENA 2024 Conference on April 12th?

We wanted to highlight some of this year’s awesome presenters!

Madison Finch BSN, RN

Presentation: Not the Reaction You Hoped For! Identifying and Responding to Adverse Reactions During Emergency Blood Transfusions

Patients in the pre-hospital and emergency department setting receive a blood transfusion for the treatment of many conditions including medical, obstetric, and trauma-related diagnoses. Transfusion of blood products is associated with complex complications, including six major reactions: allergic/anaphylactic, febrile non-hemolytic, septic, transfusion related acute lung injury, transfusion associated circulatory overload, & acute hemolytic. Knowledge of these reactions, including clinical presentation and implications for patient care, is essential for emergency nurses who routinely administer these products. Here we address the etiology, signs and symptoms, and treatment of the six major reactions seen with blood product administration.

Bio: Madison Finch is a PhD student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. Her current research focuses on acute injury prevention and management with emphasis on pre-hospital bleeding control. She has clinical experience in emergency nursing at a major academic Level I trauma center, and currently works as a clinical research nurse for the Department of Surgery-Trauma Division at the same facility. She is a certified Stop the Bleed® Instructor and actively volunteers her time providing courses for community members.

"It’s time for us to carry out our own collective act of ethical visualization. We can’t create the future we hope for until we can visualize it. As individuals and as a collective of trusted professionals. This vision will be the blueprint that guides us. It’s our declaration of what we value and believe about tomorrow. This vision is our constitution." - AACN President Amanda Bettencourt
